Chasing the Light: The Story of Dzogchen Beara’s Journey to Enlightenment

Nestled on the cliffs of the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, Dzogchen Beara stands as a testament to vision, resilience, and spiritual pursuit. What began as the dream of Peter and Harriet Cornish, a young couple captivated by the area’s natural beauty in the 1970s, has evolved into Ireland’s most prominent Tibetan Buddhist retreat center. However, the path to enlightenment for Dzogchen Beara has been anything but straightforward, marked by triumphs, tragedies, and controversies.

The Birth of Dzogchen Beara

When Peter and Harriet Cornish first set eyes on the rugged cliffs and wild seas of Beara Peninsula, they envisioned a sanctuary that would offer solace and spiritual guidance to people from all walks of life. In 1974, they embarked on their ambitious journey to create Dzogchen Beara, building what would eventually become a beacon of Tibetan Buddhist teachings in Ireland.

Peter’s vision extended beyond religious boundaries, aiming to create a space open to all, regardless of faith. Harriet shared this dream, contributing her compassion and dedication to the project’s early days. Tragically, Harriet passed away in 1993, but her influence lives on in the center’s compassionate ethos, particularly in its focus on bereavement and end-of-life care.

A Haven for Spiritual Refuge

Dzogchen Beara’s serene location plays a significant role in its appeal. Perched on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, its setting is often described as meditative in itself. The center hosts a variety of retreats and teachings, drawing attendees from around the world. A particularly unique feature is its spiritual care center, which supports individuals coping with loss, terminal illness, or personal crises.

Director Maurice O’Brien, who created the documentary Chasing the Light, describes the retreat’s atmosphere as transformative. “The view alone feels like a meditation,” O’Brien said, emphasizing how the center’s natural beauty complements its spiritual teachings.

The Sogyal Rinpoche Controversy

Dzogchen Beara faced a significant challenge in 2017 when its spiritual teacher, Sogyal Rinpoche, was accused of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by several of his students. Though the allegations did not pertain to events at the retreat in Cork, the revelations shook the center and its community.

Sogyal, a global figure in Tibetan Buddhism and the author of the best-selling The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, was closely associated with Dzogchen Beara as its spiritual director. For filmmaker Maurice O’Brien, addressing this dark chapter was essential to telling the center’s story authentically. “We couldn’t ignore it,” he explained. “His role was significant, and the controversy impacted how the center navigated its journey forward.”

Bringing the Story to the Screen

O’Brien’s documentary, Chasing the Light, captures the multi-layered narrative of Dzogchen Beara. From its humble beginnings to the spiritual and ethical challenges it faced, the film sheds light on the enduring legacy of the Cornishes’ dream.

O’Brien’s own connection to the center began when he attended a silent retreat in 2018. Struck by the place’s beauty and the transformative experiences it offered, he became inspired to document its story. “It was impossible not to want to capture this on film,” he said, recalling how the experience reignited his creative spark.

A Community’s Commitment to Healing

Despite the challenges, Dzogchen Beara remains a vibrant community. The retreat’s emphasis on compassion and healing resonates deeply with attendees, many of whom find solace in its teachings and services. The center continues to honor its founding principles, welcoming individuals of all beliefs while fostering a sense of inclusivity and shared humanity.

Peter Cornish, who passed away in 2023, lived to see his dream flourish. His legacy, along with Harriet’s, endures in the lives touched by Dzogchen Beara’s work. As O’Brien reflects, “It’s a place that stands for something much bigger than any one person.”

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

With the release of Chasing the Light, the story of Dzogchen Beara reaches a wider audience, inviting reflection on its journey and the broader themes of resilience and spiritual growth. As the center marks its 50th anniversary, it stands as a symbol of enduring hope, proving that even in the face of adversity, dreams can thrive.

An Inspiration for All

Dzogchen Beara is more than just a retreat; it’s a testament to the power of vision, community, and perseverance. As viewers experience its story through Chasing the Light, they are reminded of the transformative potential of faith, compassion, and the human spirit. The center’s journey continues, promising to inspire generations to come.
