Conor McGregor Dodges Jail Time with Suspended Sentence and Driving Ban
Conor McGregor has narrowly avoided a stint behind bars following a reckless display of dangerous driving in Dublin. The MMA icon was involved in several alarming incidents, including running a red light, weaving through traffic, and nearly causing a crash.
The incident occurred on the evening of March 22, 2022, when McGregor’s Bentley Continental GT convertible caught the attention of the Gardai. The officers had to reach speeds of 160 km/h to catch up with him. Upon being stopped, a visibly irritated McGregor questioned, “Are you taking the piss?”
Appearing before Blanchardstown District Court today, Judge David McHugh didn’t mince words. He labelled McGregor’s behaviour as an “appalling episode of dangerous driving” and “a series of breaches of road traffic rules.”
In light of the gravity
of McGregor’s actions, the judge handed down a five-month prison sentence. However, this sentence was suspended on the condition that McGregor keeps the peace for the next two years. In addition to the suspended sentence, the UFC fighter was fined €5,000 and banned from driving for two years.
Judge McHugh acknowledged that McGregor’s driving was “persistent, prolonged, and deliberate.” Despite this, he took into account McGregor’s guilty plea and the mitigating factors presented, ultimately deciding that a suspended sentence was fitting—albeit barely.
The Gardai’s pursuit, which reached speeds of 160 km/h, ended with the 36-year-old being apprehended in west Dublin.
