At Ray’s funeral, held on February 28 at St. Joseph’s Church in Springhill, Pat Ryan delivered a heartfelt eulogy that encapsulated his brother’s character and passion for hurling. He shared a poignant story from a club match against Erin’s Own, highlighting Ray’s selflessness and team-first mentality:​

“Ray was playing at centre-back… I told Ray that if we conceded no goal, we would win the match. He was to sit in front of the full-back line… the fella he was on got four or five points, but we won the match.” Pat recalled how Ray, despite personal criticism, prioritized the team’s success, embodying the spirit of dedication and humility. ​

The news of Ray’s passing elicited an outpouring of grief and support from the GAA community and beyond. Sarsfields Hurling Club expressed their profound sorrow, stating:​

“His loss has left an immense void not only within our club but also within Glanmire Football Club and the wider Glanmire community.” They lauded his unwavering dedication, passion for the game, and kindness, qualities that endeared him to many.

Tributes from friends and fellow players painted a picture of a man who was not only a talented athlete but also a cherished friend. One mourner reflected:​

“Ray was the kindest person you could meet. Thinking of his wife, children, and family at this devastating time.”

The team lined up across the ’45 for a minute’s applause, with players and staff wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
