Recent Incidents

In May 2024, a pensioner was targeted by a group of female pickpockets on a Dublin Bus. The elderly man, carrying €80,000 worth of diamond rings in an envelope, was robbed by the thieves earlier this month. The incident occurred when the man was on a crowded number 16 bus on D’Olier Street, and a woman pretending to fall on him swiped the envelope.

Bus drivers have expressed frustration over the lack of response from management and Gardaí regarding these incidents. They have reported the same group of female pickpockets boarding buses, particularly from Dublin’s Dorset Street, yet the group continues to operate.

Rising Incidents and Response

Reports of anti-social behavior on Dublin Bus services have more than doubled since 2019, rising from 500 incidents to over 1,000 in 2023. In response, Dublin Bus introduced two mobile security units operating in both the north and south areas of the city. These units are present on buses from the afternoon into the early morning hours, focusing on times and areas with the highest reported issues.

In October 2024, Dublin Bus launched the Safer Journeys Team, a 20-week pilot program aimed at enhancing safety and security. These mobile teams of security personnel travel on buses daily during afternoon, evening, and night services. Their role complements existing safety measures such as on-board CCTV, driver training, and close cooperation with the Gardaí.

Tourist Hotspots and Organized Gangs

Tourist areas in Dublin, such as the Guinness Storehouse, Temple Bar, and Dublin Castle, have become hotspots for pickpocketing. Organized gangs, often operating in groups, target these areas, taking advantage of crowded environments. Gardaí believe these thieves have been operational in several jurisdictions across the EU.

Safety Measures and Advice

Dublin Bus is committed to providing all customers with a safe and comfortable public transport service. They have implemented safety features on buses and offer advice to passengers to be mindful when traveling.

Passengers are advised to:

  • Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and keep personal belongings secure.
  • Report Incidents: If you are a victim of theft, contact your local Garda Station and make a formal complaint as soon as possible.
  • Use Safety Features: Utilize safety features available on Dublin Bus to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

The rise in pickpocketing incidents on Dublin Bus services underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive measures. While Dublin Bus has implemented security initiatives, passenger awareness and cooperation with authorities are crucial in combating this issue. By staying alert and following safety advice, passengers can help create a safer environment for all.
