Tributes are pouring in for Clodagh Phelan, an 11-year-old girl from County Wicklow, who tragically fell from a hotel balcony in Majorca on Monday morning, 22 July. Clodagh, a gifted GAA and rugby player, was cherished by her community and known for her spirited personality.

Clodagh was a member of Parnell Athletic Club in Rathdrum, Wicklow, where she was admired not only for her athletic talent but also for her vibrant spirit. The community is mourning the loss of such a promising young life.

Taoiseach Simon Harris expressed his condolences, saying, “So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan. So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident. Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

Heartfelt Tributes

Parnell Athletic Club shared their sorrow, stating, “Parnell A.C. are truly heartbroken to share the devastating news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan, one of our juvenile athletes and a friend to many of our younger athletes. Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics. Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers at this difficult time. As a mark of respect and to allow us all time to grieve the loss of Clodagh, there will be no training until further notice.”

According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, the tragic incident occurred on the seventh floor of a hotel in Alcúdia, a popular holiday destination for many Irish families. Clodagh was staying with her parents when the accident happened around 6:45 am. Despite the prompt response from emergency teams, Clodagh was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial police investigations suggest that the fall was a tragic accident. The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance to Clodagh’s family.

The entire community is left reeling from this heart-wrenching loss, and Clodagh’s memory will undoubtedly be cherished by all who knew her.
