Irish TDs Claim Over €500,000 in Expenses During Month with Single Dáil Sitting

In December 2024, Irish Teachtaí Dála (TDs) claimed over €567,000 in expenses, despite the Dáil convening only once to elect Verona Murphy as Ceann Comhairle. This revelation has sparked public debate regarding the appropriateness of such claims during periods of limited parliamentary activity.

Breakdown of Expenses

The expenses are primarily categorized under the Parliamentary Standard Allowance (PSA), which comprises:

  1. Travel and Accommodation Allowance: This allowance varies based on the distance between a TD’s residence and Leinster House, ranging from €9,000 to €34,065 annually.
  2. Public Representation Allowance: Allocated for constituency office maintenance and related activities, TDs can claim up to €20,350 annually.

These allowances are disbursed monthly, irrespective of the Dáil’s sitting frequency.

Notable Claims

In December 2024, the highest claims were submitted by:

  • Michael Collins (Cork South West): Over €4,530
  • Holly Cairns (Cork South West): Almost €4,479
  • Danny and Michael Healy-Rae (Kerry): Almost €4,479 each

Conversely, some Dublin-based TDs, including Jim O’Callaghan and Eoin Ó Broin, as well as Meath representatives Gillian Toole and Aisling Dempsey, waived the travel and accommodation allowance.

Senators’ Expenses

During the same period, Senators claimed approximately €126,000 in expenses, even though the Seanad did not convene between November and February.

Public Reaction and Accountability

The disclosure of these expenses has led to public scrutiny, with citizens questioning the justification for such claims during a month with minimal parliamentary activity. Critics argue that the current system lacks sufficient oversight and may not reflect the actual expenses incurred by TDs.

Government Response

In light of the controversy, discussions have emerged regarding potential reforms to the expense claim system to enhance transparency and ensure that allowances accurately represent the duties performed by TDs.

The significant expenses claimed by TDs during a period of limited parliamentary activity have ignited a debate on the need for greater accountability and possible reforms in the allowance system.
