Meath Man Jailed for Secretly Filming Hundreds in Public Toilets
In a disturbing case that has raised concerns about privacy and public safety, Colin Brady, a 35-year-old man from Kilgraigue, Kilcloon, Co Meath, was sentenced to two years in prison for covertly recording hundreds of men and some children using public toilets across Dublin. His actions, described by the presiding judge as “prolonged and repeated,” have shed light on the vulnerabilities individuals face in public restrooms.

Discovery of the Offense in Meath
Brady’s illicit activities came to light in September 2022 when he was spotted acting suspiciously in the restroom of a pub in Tallaght. A patron noticed Brady standing at one end of the urinal with his phone protruding from his pocket. Upon returning later, the same patron observed Brady at the opposite end of the urinal, still with his phone visibly positioned. This prompted the patron to alert the pub’s security staff, who subsequently detained Brady and confiscated his phone until Gardaí arrived.
Investigation and Evidence
Upon his arrest, Brady remarked, “my job is gone.” A subsequent search of his person revealed a second mobile phone. Both devices were sent for forensic analysis, and Brady provided the necessary PIN codes. A search of his residence, which he shared with his parents, led to the seizure of additional electronic devices, SIM cards, and SD cards. Brady admitted to Gardaí that similar material would be found on these devices.
The analysis uncovered 1,355 videos on the SD cards, primarily depicting men using urinals in various public toilets around Dublin. Notably, 25 of these videos featured children. Additional footage showed Brady masturbating other males. The videos of children were classified under category one, the lowest level in child pornography categorization.
Locations and Duration of Offenses
Brady’s covert recordings spanned multiple locations, including his workplace, pubs, shopping center restrooms, and petrol station toilets. The offenses occurred between May 2021 and September 2022. During interviews, Brady estimated that he had filmed “hundreds and hundreds” of men in total. Seven men were identified from the videos, one of whom was an off-duty Garda.
Legal Proceedings
Brady faced charges on two counts of possession of child pornography, one count of exposure in a public area, and recording videos of individuals without their knowledge or consent. He had no prior convictions. During sentencing at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Martin Nolan described the case as “unusual,” noting that the court hadn’t encountered this particular type of misbehavior before. He inferred that Brady’s primary intent was to film adult men, with the recording of children being incidental; however, Brady did not delete the footage involving minors. Taking into account mitigating factors and Brady’s personal circumstances, the judge imposed a two-year prison sentence.
Defense and Mitigation
Defense counsel highlighted Brady’s early guilty plea, cooperation with authorities, and lack of prior criminal history. They noted that Brady came from a respectable family and had been struggling with his sexuality, which may have contributed to his actions. Since his arrest, Brady had engaged in counseling. A letter from his mother, expressing shock and acknowledging the hurt caused to the victims, was also presented to the court.
Privacy Concerns and Public Safety
This case underscores significant concerns about privacy in public spaces. The covert recording of individuals in vulnerable situations, such as using restrooms, represents a profound violation of personal privacy and trust. It highlights the need for increased vigilance and potential security measures in public facilities to protect individuals from such invasions.
Conclusion
Colin Brady’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal privacy in public spaces. While the legal system has addressed this particular offense, it prompts broader discussions about ensuring safety and privacy in communal areas. As society becomes more aware of such violations, there may be increased advocacy for enhanced security measures and public awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future.
