In a momentous announcement for Irish sports, Orla Comerford and Colin Judge have been selected as the flagbearers for Team Ireland at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The ceremony, set to take place at the historic Place de la Concorde on 28 August, will be a landmark event, marking the first time the Paralympic opening ceremony is held outside the main stadium.
The Athletes: Pride of Ireland
Orla Comerford, a T13 100m sprinter, is preparing for her third Paralympic Games after making her debut in Rio 2016. Comerford has been in outstanding form recently, breaking her personal best by running under 12 seconds. Her track record includes a European Championship bronze medal and a close fourth-place finish at the World Championships.
Colin Judge, a table tennis star, will be competing in his second Paralympic Games. Unlike his debut in Tokyo, where the games were held without spectators, Judge will experience the full atmosphere in Paris. He has had a stellar season, earning a bronze at the European Championships and a silver at the Czech Open.
A Landmark Ceremony
The selection of Comerford and Judge as flagbearers reflects their hard work, dedication, and leadership both on and off the field. Chef de Mission Neasa Russell praised their achievements and their roles as role models for the Irish team and fans alike. The ceremony at Place de la Concorde will be a historic moment for the athletes, the nation, and the Paralympic movement.
As Team Ireland gears up for the Paralympics, the selection of Orla Comerford and Colin Judge as flagbearers symbolizes the strength, resilience, and potential of Irish athletes. Their leadership will undoubtedly inspire their teammates and supporters as they compete on the world stage.
