Cookes’s criminal activities were multifaceted and meticulously planned. She falsely claimed to have Huntington’s disease, a debilitating neurological condition, to fraudulently obtain social welfare benefits. Between February 2020 and June 2024, she received €17,747 in supplementary welfare allowances and an additional €40,264 in disability allowances. She deceived a general practitioner into endorsing her fraudulent claims, leading to the approval of these benefits. ​

Beyond social welfare fraud, Cookes exploited the arts sector by securing €36,200 in grants from the Arts Council under the alias “Jade Cooke.” In 2021, she was awarded €15,000 for an English-language bursary in literature, followed by a €21,250 project award in 2022. The Arts Council has refrained from commenting on the specifics of her applications, citing confidentiality.

A History of Fraudulent Behavior

Cookes’s criminal record extends beyond these recent offenses. In 2011, she was convicted in the UK for posing as a surrogate mother, defrauding a couple of £1,200. After relocating to Ireland, she continued her deceptive practices, including a 2019 conviction for defrauding a father in Cork by producing a fake child psychologist report for €840. She has also used multiple aliases to secure positions as an au pair, exploiting families across Dublin, Cork, and Kildare. ​

Defense counsel highlighted Cookes’s complex psychological profile, referencing a traumatic event in 2008 when she lost a child to sudden infant death syndrome. This incident purportedly had a profound impact on her mental health, potentially influencing her subsequent fraudulent behaviors. While in custody, Cookes has engaged in educational programs, including studies in calligraphy, mathematics, and personal development, and has been working in the prison laundry.
