Irish holidaymakers have been warned as a severe weather alert has been issued for popular tourist destinations in Spain including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

The Spanish meteorological agency AEMET has issued a number of weather warnings for “very strong showers and storms” from Wednesday, August 11 until Friday, August 16.

Mallorca has received a rare Status Red rain alert for Thursday, with AEMET saying: “Extreme danger of rain in the north and north-east of Mallorca.

“Very adverse situation during the early hours and morning of Thursday.”

AEMET have warned that normal activities may be seriously disrupted and advised those in the vicinity to not travel unless it is strictly necessary.

The forecaster’s website says that very strong showers and storms will continue on Thursday in much of the Balearic island archipelago, mainly in the first half of the day. The weather will include hail and very strong gusts of wind, however the intense rain will be the “greatest adversity” and may reach more than 60mm/hour.

Other cities on the mainland like Barcelona, Alicante, Valencia and Girona are under an amber alert for today (Wednesday, August 12). The amber warning includes very strong gusts of wind, hail and rough sea conditions along the eastern coast of Spain.
