A Career of Cultural Significance

Born on December 22, 1965, in San Antonio, Joss was of Comanche and White Mountain Apache descent. He brought authenticity and depth to his roles, most notably as John Redcorn in King of the Hill, a character he voiced from the show’s second season until its original conclusion in 2009. Joss was also involved in the upcoming revival of the series, having recorded lines for new episodes. His portrayal of Native American characters extended to other projects, including his role as Chief Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation.

The Tragic Incident

On the evening of June 1, Joss and his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, visited their former residence, which had been destroyed in a fire earlier that year. While checking their mail, they reportedly discovered the remains of one of their dogs, which had perished in the fire. This distressing discovery led to an emotional reaction. During this moment, a neighbor, identified as 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, allegedly approached them, hurled homophobic slurs, and opened fire. Joss was shot while reportedly pushing his husband out of harm’s way, an act that likely saved de Gonzales’s life. Joss was pronounced dead at the scene.

A History of Harassment

According to de Gonzales, the couple had endured years of harassment from Ceja and others in the neighborhood, much of it rooted in homophobia. They had reported threats to law enforcement multiple times, including explicit warnings that their home would be set on fire—a threat that materialized in January 2025, resulting in the loss of their home and three dogs.

Despite these reports, de Gonzales stated that no substantial action was taken by authorities to address their concerns. The couple’s pleas for help went unanswered, leaving them vulnerable to continued hostility.

Legal Proceedings and Community Response

Ceja was arrested shortly after the shooting and has been charged with murder. He is currently held on a $200,000 bond. San Antonio police have stated that, at this time, there is no evidence to classify the shooting as a hate crime. However, they have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that charges could be updated should new information emerge.

The LGBTQ+ community and advocates for Native American representation have expressed outrage and sorrow over Joss’s death. Many have called for a thorough investigation into the role that hate and discrimination may have played in the events leading up to the shooting.

Remembering Jonathan Joss

Beyond his professional achievements, Joss was known for his resilience and dedication to his craft. Following the fire that destroyed his home, he continued to engage with fans and work on projects, including the King of the Hill revival. His commitment to authentic representation of Native American culture in media left a lasting impact on audiences and the industry alike.

In a heartfelt statement, de Gonzales paid tribute to his late husband: “He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other. I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved.”

Joss’s death is a stark reminder of the dangers that marginalized communities continue to face. His legacy endures through his work and the lives he touched, both on and off the screen.
