The Incident

At approximately 11:10 PM, the driver of Route 13 was seated towards the back of the stationary bus, awaiting departure. An individual boarded the vehicle, seemingly unaware of the driver’s presence. Upon being informed that the bus would not depart for several minutes, the man exited, only to return moments later, brandishing what appeared to be a gun. He made motions as if loading the weapon and threatened to “blow the driver’s head off” before fleeing the scene. The driver was left “extremely shocked and upset” by the encounter.

Union Response

In response to the incident, the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU), representing the majority of Dublin Bus drivers, took immediate action. Brendan McInerney, president of the union’s bus driver committee, stated that services in the Mountjoy Square area would be withdrawn after 7:00 PM until further safety measures are implemented. He emphasized the need for discussions with management to ensure the protection of drivers.

Calls for Enhanced Security

John Murphy, SIPTU sector organiser, highlighted the increasing frequency of such dangerous situations on the public transport network. He called for the immediate establishment of a dedicated transport police force with arrest powers, as previously committed to in the Programme for Government. Murphy stressed that the creation of this body is of “urgent importance” to union members.

Dublin Bus Statement

Dublin Bus confirmed the occurrence of the incident, noting that no passengers were on board at the time. The company is providing full support to the affected driver and is cooperating with An Garda Síochána in the ongoing investigation. Due to the incident, Routes 7/a and 13 are temporarily not serving their terminus at Mountjoy Square. Alternative stops have been designated on O’Connell Street and Parnell Square East, respectively.

Garda Investigation

An Garda Síochána has initiated an investigation into the reported threat involving a suspected firearm. While no injuries were reported, authorities are actively seeking information and urging witnesses to come forward.

Broader Implications

This incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced security measures to protect public transport workers. The union’s call for a dedicated transport police force reflects growing concerns about the safety of drivers and passengers alike. As discussions between unions, Dublin Bus management, and government officials continue, the focus remains on implementing effective solutions to prevent such incidents in the future.
