Tragically, two individuals lost their lives, and six others sustained severe injuries in separate road incidents.

Alarming Speeding Violations this Bank Holiday

Among the most egregious speeding offenses, a motorist was clocked at 181 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N25 in Ballynamone, Co. Kilkenny. Other notable violations included a driver at 151 km/h in a 100 km/h zone in Drumfin, Co. Sligo, and a motorcyclist reaching 129 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Navan Road, Dublin 15.

DUI Arrests and Checkpoints

The Gardaí’s extensive operation included over 1,000 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints, resulting in more than 13,000 breath tests and approximately 280 oral fluid tests. These efforts led to 187 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Additional Offenses and Vehicle Seizures

Beyond speeding and DUI offenses, Gardaí issued over 270 fixed charge notices for mobile phone use while driving, more than 340 for unaccompanied learner drivers, and 115 for not wearing seatbelts. Furthermore, 147 vehicles were seized from unaccompanied learner permit holders, and 444 vehicles were impounded for lacking tax or insurance.

The Human Cost

The weekend’s enforcement activities underscore the ongoing challenges in promoting road safety. The two fatalities and multiple serious injuries serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of dangerous driving behaviors. Authorities continue to urge all road users to adhere to traffic laws and prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
