In a welcome boost for thousands of commuters, Leap Card travel has been expanded to cover train journeys up to 50km from Dublin. This change, effective immediately, is set to benefit rail users travelling from outer commuter zones who previously had to rely on paper tickets or more expensive fare structures.

The announcement, made by the National Transport Authority (NTA), aims to simplify public transport access and reduce travel costs for those living just outside the capital.

If you regularly commute from towns near Dublin, here’s what you need to know:

• Leap Card coverage has expanded to include all rail journeys within a 50km radius of Dublin city centre.
• This includes major commuter towns such as Drogheda, Sallins, Maynooth, Dunboyne, and Wicklow.
• The change applies to DART, Commuter, and Intercity rail services within that range.

Why It Matters

Until now, many commuters just outside the Leap zone were excluded from the cheaper fares and convenience the card offers.

What You Need To Do

If you already have a Leap Card:

• Simply use it as usual — the new zone will be automatically recognised.
• Make sure to tap on at the platform validator before boarding, and tap off at your destination.

If you don’t have one:

• Leap Cards can be purchased online or at hundreds of retail locations including newsagents, train stations, and convenience shops.
• You can also download the Leap Top-Up App to manage your card on your phone.
