Cable Car Accident Near Naples Leaves Tourists Dead
Tragedy on Monte Faito: Cable Car Crash Claims Four Lives
On April 17, 2025, a devastating cable car accident occurred on Monte Faito near Castellammare di Stabia, Campania, Italy, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and leaving one person seriously injured. The incident transpired when a supporting cable snapped during the descent, causing the cabin to plummet. A second cabin was successfully evacuated without injuries.

The Victims
The victims included two British tourists, an Israeli woman, and the cable car operator. Another Israeli tourist sustained critical injuries and was transported to a hospital in Naples.
Rescue Efforts
Emergency responders, including alpine rescue teams and firefighters, promptly arrived at the scene. Sixteen passengers from the second cabin, which had become stranded mid-route, were safely evacuated by rescue personnel. Tourists on board were uninjured but treated for shock.

Investigation and Response
The cable car service had resumed operations on March 25, 2025, after routine winter maintenance. The Monte Faito cable car connects the town of Castellammare di Stabia with the summit of Monte Faito, a popular tourist destination near the Bay of Naples.
Prosecutors in Torre Annunziata have initiated an investigation into the crash. Italy’s transport minister described the accident as “a grave tragedy” and pledged transparency in the investigation. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was on a trip to Washington at the time, expressed sincere condolences through her office.
Historical Context
This incident is reminiscent of previous cable car accidents in Italy. In 1960, a similar accident on the same cable car line resulted in four deaths. More recently, in 2021, a cable car crash on the Stresa-Mottarone line in northern Italy claimed 14 lives.
The tragic accident on Monte Faito underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and regular maintenance for cable car systems, especially those in mountainous regions. As investigations continue, authorities aim to determine the exact cause of the cable failure and implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
