Community Reels as Chef Admits to Cooking Human Remains
In a case that has horrified France and drawn international attention, 69-year-old former butcher and pizza chef Philippe Schneider stands trial for the 2023 murder of 60-year-old recluse Georges Meichler in the village of Brasc, southern France. Schneider is accused of killing Meichler during a botched burglary, dismembering his body, and cooking parts of it with vegetables in an attempt to mask the odor and conceal the crime.

The Crime
According to court proceedings, Schneider, along with his partner Nathalie Caboubassy, 45, and alleged accomplice Loup Benrakia, 25, planned to rob Meichler’s isolated home, targeting cash and cannabis. Schneider claims that during the burglary, Meichler was tied up and gagged, leading to his accidental suffocation. In an effort to hide the body, Schneider dismembered Meichler, burned some parts, and cooked others with vegetables, purportedly to mask the smell.
Discovery and Investigation
The crime came to light when Meichler’s daughter received an uncharacteristic text message from his phone, prompting her to report him missing. Police investigations led to the discovery of Meichler’s remains and blood in his van, which Schneider and Caboubassy were found driving.
Trial and Charges
Schneider has confessed to the murder and is charged with kidnapping leading to death, concealment of a corpse, and endangering the integrity of a corpse. Caboubassy and Benrakia deny involvement but face charges of complicity.
Psychological Profile
Schneider’s defense cites his history of substance abuse and alleged childhood trauma, suggesting these factors contributed to his actions. Psychological evaluations indicate a need for control and manipulation in his behavior.
Community Impact
The gruesome nature of the crime has shocked the local community, raising concerns about safety and the effectiveness of social services in rural areas. The trial continues to draw significant media attention as the public awaits the verdict.
