Convicted Sex Offender Charged in Fatal Stabbing of Asylum Seeker in Dublin
Tragic Incident in Dublin’s City Centre
In the early hours of Saturday, February 15, 2025, Dublin’s South Anne Street became the scene of a fatal stabbing that claimed the life of 34-year-old Quham Babatunde, an asylum seeker from Nigeria. The incident, which occurred shortly after 3:00 AM, reportedly began as an altercation between two groups inside a nightclub and escalated onto the street. Emergency services found Mr. Babatunde unresponsive with severe injuries; he was transported to St. James’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Another man in his 30s sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the attack.

Arrests and Charges
The investigation led to the arrest of three individuals. A 23-year-old man, identified as a convicted sex offender, was apprehended in Belfast by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) on Sunday, February 16, as he attempted to board a ferry to Liverpool. He has since been charged in connection with the fatal assault and is scheduled to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Friday.
In Dublin, two other men were arrested. Jeffrey Bangu, 21, from Balbriggan, appeared before Dublin District Court on Tuesday, February 18. He faces charges including assault causing harm to Mr. Babatunde, assaulting another individual, producing a knife during a fight, and engaging in violent disorder. Bangu was remanded in custody and is set to appear via video link on February 25 for further directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The third suspect, Rory Carr, 21, also from Balbriggan, was charged with assault causing harm to both Mr. Babatunde and another man, as well as engaging in violent disorder. He was remanded in custody following a court appearance on Wednesday, February 19, and is scheduled for a subsequent hearing on February 26.
Community Response and Official Statements
The violent death of Mr. Babatunde has sparked outrage and concern among Dublin’s residents and officials. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the incident, stating, “The people involved need to know that they’ll be tracked down by An Garda Síochána and brought to justice.” He emphasized that such violence is “unacceptable in this city and in this country.”
Tánaiste Simon Harris described the situation as “alarming, shocking, and deeply concerning.” He highlighted the government’s commitment to increasing Garda presence on Dublin’s streets to ensure public safety.
Local business owners have also expressed their distress. Noel Anderson, managing director of Lemon & Duke bar, called the lack of law and order in the capital a “national disgrace,” urging for immediate action to restore safety.
Ongoing Investigation
An Garda Síochána continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing. They have appealed to the public for information, particularly from those who were in the South Anne Street/Duke Lane Upper area between 2:45 AM and 3:30 AM on February 15. Individuals with mobile phone footage or dash-cam recordings are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation.
Victim’s Background
Mr. Babatunde had been residing in the Ballyogan International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) center in south Dublin. Originally from Nigeria, he had been in Ireland for several years awaiting the outcome of his asylum application. The management of the Ballyogan center extended their condolences, stating, “Our sincere condolences go out to his friends and family and anyone who knew him in Ballyogan.”
Implications and Community Concerns
This tragic event has reignited discussions about public safety, knife crime, and the effectiveness of the justice system in Ireland. The fact that one of the suspects is a convicted sex offender raises questions about monitoring and rehabilitation of individuals with prior convictions. Community leaders and residents are calling for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of such violent incidents and to prevent their recurrence.
