Cork Airport’s €200M Revamp: Solar Farm and Terminal Overhaul Unveiled
A Bold Leap into the Future
Cork Airport is poised for a transformative journey with a €200 million capital development plan, marking its most significant upgrade in two decades. This ambitious initiative encompasses the demolition of outdated infrastructure, the introduction of sustainable energy solutions, and enhancements to passenger facilities, positioning the airport to accommodate over five million travelers annually.

Demolishing the Past: Making Way for Modernization
A pivotal aspect of the redevelopment involves the removal of the old terminal and control tower. These structures will be replaced by a new pier extending from the southern end of the terminal, featuring additional boarding gates, expanded food and beverage options, and more aircraft parking stands. Preliminary design work is slated to commence within the next year, with an anticipated completion between 2032 and 2034, potentially earlier if passenger numbers surge.
Harnessing the Sun: A Step Towards Sustainability
In alignment with global sustainability goals, Cork Airport plans to construct a 1.7MW solar farm. This facility will be installed canopy-style over the existing ‘holiday blue’ car park, supplying over 20% of the airport’s electricity needs. Construction is scheduled to begin in January and conclude by August.
Enhancing Passenger Experience: Upgrades and Expansions
To improve passenger services, a new mezzanine floor will be built over the arrivals area, housing a state-of-the-art security screening zone equipped with advanced technology to streamline the process. Additionally, a 30% larger duty-free shop will be introduced, and two new boarding gates will be added to the terminal’s northern side. The long-term car park will see a 630-space expansion, with provisions for further extensions to accommodate growing demand.
Economic Impact: Boosting the Region
Cork Airport’s expansion is expected to significantly contribute to the local economy. Currently, the airport supports over 12,000 jobs and contributes more than €1 billion to the Irish economy. With enhanced facilities and increased capacity, the airport aims to attract more airlines and routes, fostering tourism and business opportunities in the South of Ireland.
A Vision Realized
The €200 million development plan for Cork Airport represents a strategic investment in the region’s future, blending modernization with sustainability. As the airport evolves to meet growing demands, it stands as a testament to Ireland’s commitment to progress and environmental responsibility.
