Defence Forces Rescue Helps Kieran Harkins Make Life-Saving Dialysis Appointment
Sixteen-year-old Kieran Harkins faced a harrowing situation when snow nearly prevented him from making his crucial first day of dialysis at Cork University Hospital (CUH). Living in Bweeng, Co Cork, Kieran and his family found themselves stuck in nearly a foot of snow, their car immobilized as they tried to make their way to the hospital.
But what could have turned into a medical crisis was averted thanks to the heroic efforts of the Defence Forces, who transported Kieran and his mother, Ger, to the hospital in a military jeep. This extraordinary act of kindness underscores the importance of community, resilience, and the vital role played by emergency responders in Ireland.
Kieran’s Journey with Kidney Failure
Kieran’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Diagnosed with kidney failure last March, the transition year student has faced incredible challenges. For months, Kieran and his mother traveled to Dublin three times a week for dialysis treatments. After turning 16 in October, his care was transferred to CUH, a move that brought some relief to the family but also new logistical challenges.
Despite the hardships, Kieran remains remarkably positive. His mother Ger shared, “The last few months have been really tough, but we never moan. Kieran is so strong and deals with his own struggles so well, so how could we be anything but positive?”
A Race Against the Weather
When heavy snowfall blanketed their rural road, the Harkins family knew they were facing a serious problem. With between eight and ten inches of snow making their usual route impassable, missing dialysis wasn’t an option. Ger explained, “My husband tried to drive our jeep up the road, but it got completely stuck. Missing dialysis wasn’t an option for Kieran. We had to make it to CUH.”
It was then that the Defence Forces stepped in. Members Steven and Shane arrived in a military jeep, ready to ensure that Kieran reached his appointment safely.
A Memorable Adventure
What could have been a stressful ordeal turned into an unforgettable adventure for Kieran. Riding in a military jeep to the hospital was a unique experience, and despite the circumstances, he enjoyed the excitement of the journey.
“He thought it was great craic,” his mother Ger recounted with a laugh. “There was even a nurse with us who also needed to get to the hospital. It was a surreal experience and one that will stay in our family’s memories for years to come.”
The Strength of a Young Hero
Kieran’s positive outlook and resilience have inspired everyone around him. Ger praised her son’s unwavering strength, noting that he never complains despite the uncertainty surrounding his health.
“We have no idea when the transplant will come. It’s like asking how long a piece of string is. But Kieran never complains. He is a great young fella. He draws good people towards him,” Ger said.
Gratitude for the Defence Forces
The family expressed immense gratitude to the Defence Forces for their assistance. Ger shared, “We are extremely grateful to Steven and Shane, who took us to the hospital that day. They were so lovely to us from start to finish.”
Their heroic act is a testament to the compassion and dedication of Ireland’s Defence Forces, who often go above and beyond to help those in need.
A Story of Resilience and Hope
This heartwarming story highlights the strength of a family navigating immense challenges and the generosity of those who step in during critical moments. It serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of supporting one another through life’s difficulties.
For Kieran and his family, the journey continues, but this day will undoubtedly remain a beacon of hope and resilience in their lives.
