In a disturbing revelation, Dublin City Council has announced the deployment of stewards to patrol the iconic Molly Malone statue, aiming to deter the persistent and degrading act of tourists and locals groping the statue’s breasts. This reprehensible behavior has not only disrespected the cultural significance of the monument but has also led to physical deterioration, prompting urgent intervention.​

The Disgraceful Tradition

For over a decade, an appalling “tradition” has emerged where individuals, spurred by misguided beliefs, have been rubbing the statue’s breasts under the pretense of gaining good luck. This act has resulted in noticeable discolouration and damage to the bronze surface, particularly around the neckline. Dublin City Council Arts Officer Ray Yeates expressed profound concern, stating, “The rubbing is removing the patination or the protection of the bronze, and we have to keep redoing that every year or so.”

Immediate Measures: Deployment of Stewards

In response to this ongoing violation, the council will introduce stewards starting in May to monitor and prevent further molestation of the statue. These stewards will actively discourage inappropriate interactions and educate the public on the importance of respecting cultural monuments. Yeates emphasized, “This is about education because it’s my observation that people are very unaware of what they’re doing.”

Community Outrage and Advocacy

The blatant disrespect towards the statue has sparked outrage among Dublin’s residents and cultural advocates. Catherine Scuffil, Dublin City Historian in Residence and relative of the statue’s sculptor Jeanne Rynhart, voiced her dismay: “The ‘groping’ of the figure is not what the late artist … .”

Furthermore, singer-songwriter Tilly Cripwell initiated the “Leave Molly mAlone” campaign, condemning the offensive behavior and advocating for the statue’s protection. Cripwell highlighted the broader societal implications, stating, “It’s a really bad example on the standards we’re setting for behavior around women in society.” ​

Structural Concerns and Preservation Efforts

Beyond the immediate disrespect, there are significant concerns regarding the structural integrity of the statue. Individuals climbing onto the plinth pose risks not only to themselves but also to the monument’s stability. Yeates warned, “We need to look at the safety … .”

To address these issues, the council is considering additional protective measures, including the application of a protective coating to the statue’s surface and potential physical barriers to deter inappropriate contact. However, these solutions come with financial and aesthetic considerations.​
