Dundalk Dominate While Rivals Stumble – Full League of Ireland First Division Recap!

A Week of High Stakes in the First Division

The League of Ireland First Division continued its thrilling 2025 season between 14 and 20 April, with Dundalk tightening their grip at the top while rivals faced mixed fortunes. Every fixture counted as clubs battled for promotion hopes or fought to avoid sliding into obscurity.

Dundalk Extend Their Lead

Ciarán Kilduff’s Dundalk side maintained their unbeaten streak, demonstrating a level of composure and professionalism that few could match this season. Their narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Treaty United came courtesy of a Dean Ebbe penalty, solidifying their position as the team to beat.

Kilduff praised his players, stating: “It’s not just about skill, it’s about character. Every single one of them showed that today.”

With nine wins and two draws, Dundalk have opened a serious gap at the summit, and the momentum is entirely with them.

Wexford Show Intent

Stephen Elliott’s Wexford bounced back with a vital 2-1 win over Bray Wanderers, thanks to goals from Mikie Rowe and Calum Flynn. The manager emphasised after the match: “Our young players are standing up at big moments, and that’s what will drive us forward.”

This win keeps Wexford firmly in the promotion picture, continuing their impressive transformation under Elliott’s leadership.

Cobh Ramblers’ Slip-Up

Cobh Ramblers were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against UCD. Despite an early goal from Barry Coffey, defensive lapses allowed UCD to claw back a point. Manager Mick McDermott acknowledged the setback: “We have to be sharper. One lapse cost us dearly.”

Cobh remain strong contenders but can ill afford more dropped points if they wish to maintain pressure on Dundalk.

Kerry’s Fight Continues

Although Kerry FC remain near the bottom, they produced an encouraging 2-2 draw away to Finn Harps, with Luke Palmer once again on the scoresheet. Palmer’s form is one of the few bright spots in Kerry’s otherwise difficult season.

Finn Harps, under Kevin McHugh, continue to struggle with consistency, a theme that has defined their 2025 campaign so far.

Longford Town Secure Vital Points

Wayne Groves’ Longford Town earned a crucial 2-0 win against Athlone Town, with standout performances from Aaron Doran and goalkeeper Harry Halwax. The result lifts them closer to midtable safety.

Groves stated: “This group is learning how to win tough games. That’s massive for us moving forward.”
