Employee Awarded £29,000 After Darth Vader Comparison at Work
In a notable employment tribunal case in the UK, Lorna Rooke, a former training supervisor with NHS Blood and Transplant, was awarded nearly £29,000 after a colleague compared her to the Star Wars villain Darth Vader during a workplace team-building exercise. The incident, which occurred in August 2021, involved a Star Wars-themed personality test intended to foster team cohesion. Rooke was absent due to a personal phone call, during which a colleague completed the test on her behalf and announced to the team that she had received the Darth Vader personality type.

The tribunal, held in Croydon, South London, found that this comparison constituted a workplace “detriment,” a legal term indicating harm or negative impact experienced by an employee. Employment Judge Kathryn Ramsden stated, “Darth Vader is a legendary villain of the Star Wars series, and being aligned with his personality is insulting.” She further noted that the public nature of the announcement contributed to Rooke’s distress.
Rooke testified that the incident made her feel unpopular and exacerbated existing workplace stress and anxiety, leading to her resignation the following month. While the tribunal did not accept that the Darth Vader comparison directly caused her resignation, it acknowledged the incident as a significant factor contributing to her decision to leave.
The tribunal awarded Rooke £28,989.61 in compensation for the harm suffered. However, her claims for unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, and failure to make reasonable adjustments were dismissed.
This case underscores the importance of sensitivity and consent in workplace activities, particularly those involving personal assessments or character comparisons. Even well-intentioned team-building exercises can have unintended negative consequences if not conducted thoughtfully and respectfully.
