Fuel Allowance Scheme Ends for 2025 Season as Over 400,000 Households Benefit
The Government’s Fuel Allowance scheme—a vital winter support for low-income households—has officially concluded for the 2024/2025 season, with the final payment issued on 4 April 2025. The end of the scheme marks the close of another challenging winter for thousands of Irish families coping with high energy and heating costs.

What Is the Fuel Allowance?
The Fuel Allowance is a weekly social welfare payment of €33, designed to assist eligible households with the cost of heating their homes during the colder months. The allowance is part of Ireland’s wider National Fuel Scheme, administered by the Department of Social Protection.
For the 2024/2025 season, the scheme ran from 23 September 2024 to 4 April 2025, covering just over six months of payments.
Over 409,000 Households Supported
According to figures released by the Department, this year’s scheme provided support to approximately 409,721 households across the country. The payment has been particularly important amid continued cost-of-living pressures and fluctuating energy prices.
Expanded Eligibility
In a positive development, recent changes to the eligibility criteria meant that an additional 9,000 households were approved for the Fuel Allowance this season.
Adjustments included:
- A higher income threshold for qualifying households
- Greater flexibility for people aged over 70
- Consideration of fuel poverty risk factors beyond income alone
These changes reflect a wider government effort to target supports toward vulnerable groups, especially older people, carers, and those on long-term social welfare payments.
Public Response and Calls for Review
While the Fuel Allowance is widely seen as a lifeline, some advocacy groups continue to call for reforms, including:
- Extending the duration of the scheme into spring
- Increasing the weekly rate in line with rising fuel prices
- Including more low-income workers who currently fall outside the income criteria
“For many people, heating costs remain high well into April and May,” said a spokesperson from a national poverty support charity. “We’d welcome a review to ensure no one is left out in the cold.”

Looking Ahead
Although this season’s scheme has now ended, the Department of Social Protection has encouraged eligible households to prepare for the 2025/2026 Fuel Allowance application window, expected to open in late summer. Those whose circumstances have changed—including changes in income, household composition, or living arrangements—are advised to update their details as early as possible.
Final Thought
As Ireland continues to grapple with energy costs and inflation, the Fuel Allowance remains a critical measure to protect the most vulnerable. With over 400,000 households benefiting this winter, the scheme continues to play a central role in supporting Irish families through the colder months.
