Gardaí Sting Uncovers €680 Fake Driving Licence Scam via WhatsApp
In a recent operation, Gardaí exposed a scammer selling counterfeit Irish driving licences for €680 through social media and WhatsApp. The fraudster claimed these fake licences could “pass Garda checks” and even appear genuine in official databases.

The Undercover Operation
Gardaí initiated a covert investigation by posing as interested buyers. The scammer, unaware of the trap, provided images of the counterfeit licences and assured their authenticity. He claimed to work “under NDLS” and offered payment options via Revolut or PayPal.
The Reveal: A Badge and a Warning
After gathering sufficient evidence, the undercover Garda sent a picture of their official badge to the scammer, accompanied by the message: “That’s my work ID, all messages saved.” This marked the culmination of the sting operation.
Legal Implications and Public Safety
Gardaí emphasized that presenting a fake driving licence is a serious offence, potentially leading to charges beyond road traffic violations, including fraud. They cautioned the public against engaging with such offers and highlighted the risks associated with using counterfeit documents.
Public Reaction and Awareness
The operation has garnered attention on social media, with many praising the Gardaí’s approach to exposing the scam. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the dangers of engaging with fraudulent schemes.
