Government Urges Community Groups to Apply for €4 Million Fund from Seized Criminal Assets
The Irish government has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Community Safety Fund, a €4 million initiative aimed at enhancing community safety and deterring vulnerable youth from engaging in criminal activities. This fund reallocates money seized from organized crime, channeling it back into communities most affected by such activities.

Expansion of the Community Safety Fund
Established in 2022, the Community Safety Fund initially allocated €2 million to support local projects focused on crime prevention and community well-being. In 2024, the fund increased to €3.75 million, supporting 33 projects. The 2025 allocation marks a significant expansion, doubling the original amount to €4 million.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan emphasized the fund’s role in building stronger and safer communities by reinvesting seized criminal assets into community safety initiatives. He stated, “Investing this money into the communities provides that tangible and direct link between law enforcement and building stronger, safer communities.”
Grant Details and Application Process
The fund offers grants ranging from €20,000 to €150,000 to support projects that aim to:
- Reduce the fear of crime
- Improve community safety and feelings of safety
- Support the creation of safe and resilient communities
- Reduce reoffending
- Divert vulnerable individuals away from engagement in criminal behavior
Community groups are encouraged to submit their applications by May 16, 2025. The National Office for Community Safety within the Department of Justice manages the application process. Applications can be emailed to [email protected].
Previous Beneficiaries and Impact
In previous years, the fund has supported various initiatives, including the pilot Community Safety Wardens projects in Limerick and Cork, as well as continued funding for wardens in Dublin’s Wolfe Tone Park. These wardens promote pro-social behavior and collaborate with support services, businesses, and the public to address specific community concerns.
The fund has also backed projects aimed at reducing crime fear, enhancing community safety, and supporting the development of resilient communities. By redirecting criminal assets into these initiatives, the government aims to create a tangible link between law enforcement efforts and community development.
Government’s Commitment to Community Safety
During a visit to Ballymun Garda Station and the Ballymun Implementation Board—a multi-agency committee addressing deep-rooted issues in North Dublin—Minister O’Callaghan reiterated the government’s dedication to community safety. He highlighted that the increased funding demonstrates a commitment to addressing the underlying factors contributing to crime and supporting communities in their efforts to create safer environments.
Encouragement for Community Participation
The government urges community groups to seize this opportunity to access funding that can make a significant impact on local safety and well-being. By applying for grants, organizations can implement projects that deter crime, support vulnerable individuals, and foster a sense of security within their communities.
Minister O’Callaghan stated, “The Community Safety Fund is an important part of my overall objective to build stronger and safer communities.” This initiative not only aids in crime prevention but also empowers communities to take an active role in shaping their safety and resilience.
The 2025 Community Safety Fund represents a proactive approach by the Irish government to address crime through community engagement and support. By reallocating seized criminal assets into local initiatives, the fund aims to create a direct link between law enforcement successes and community development. Community groups are encouraged to apply for this funding to implement projects that will contribute to safer and more resilient communities across Ireland.
