Gunman Opens Fire in Carlow Shopping Centre Before Taking Own Life

On the evening of June 1, 2025, a tragic shooting incident occurred at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow, Ireland. A man in his early 20s, identified as a white Irish male known to authorities and previously out on bail for firearms offences, entered the supermarket with a shotgun and fired several shots. He then took his own life outside the premises. Amid the chaos, a nine-year-old girl sustained very minor injuries and was treated at the scene before returning home with her parent.

The shopping centre was evacuated and remained sealed off overnight, with people unable to access their vehicles in the car park. The Gardaí, supported by the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, are actively investigating the incident and have urged witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward. Authorities have requested that any recorded footage not be shared on social media platforms or messaging apps but instead be provided to Gardaí at Carlow Garda Station.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan described the event as a “really shocking incident” and emphasized that “gun violence is very rare in Ireland, and I am determined that will remain the case.” Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris expressed deep concern, stating, “I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight.” Taoiseach Micheál Martin also conveyed his shock and sadness, urging anyone with information to assist the Gardaí in their investigation.

Local councillor Fergal Browne recounted the panic that ensued, noting that people ran from the centre crying and upset. He highlighted the community’s resilience and the importance of supporting those affected by the traumatic event.

As the investigation continues, authorities have confirmed there is no further concern for public safety. The incident has prompted discussions on mental health support and the importance of community vigilance.
