Details of the Incident

The helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, departed from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at approximately 2:59 p.m. After a brief tour that included circling the Statue of Liberty and flying along the Manhattan skyline, the aircraft turned north near the George Washington Bridge before heading south along the New Jersey shoreline. At around 3:17 p.m., witnesses reported hearing loud noises and observing the helicopter break apart mid-air, with debris falling into the Hudson River near Pier 40.

Emergency responders from the NYPD and FDNY arrived promptly, recovering all six victims from the water. Four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining two succumbed to their injuries after being transported to local hospitals.

Victims Identified

The victims have been identified as:

  • Agustín Escobar, Global CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility.
  • Merce Camprubi Montal, Global Commercialization Manager at Siemens Energy.
  • Their three children, aged 4, 5, and 11.
  • The 36-year-old pilot, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed.

The family had arrived in New York City earlier that day for a vacation.

Witness Accounts

Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes as the helicopter disintegrated in mid-air. Dani Horbiak, a resident of Jersey City, recounted, “I watched it fall out of the sky! I heard five or six loud noises that sounded almost like gunshots in the sky and saw pieces fall off, then watched it fall into the river.”

Another witness, Bruce Wall, observed, “I heard some crackling, looked up and then just saw a plane falling apart. And then maybe 15 feet in the air after the tail came off, broke off, and then the plane just sort of tumbled into the water with the propeller still in the air.”

Investigation Underway

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest a catastrophic mechanical failure, with the helicopter’s main rotor and tail boom detaching mid-flight. The exact cause remains undetermined, and authorities are meticulously examining the wreckage and flight data.

The tragic incident has elicited condolences from various officials and organizations. New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed, “Our hearts go out to the family and those on board.”

Siemens released a statement mourning the loss of their esteemed colleagues, highlighting Agustín Escobar’s significant contributions to the company and expressing deep sorrow over the family’s untimely passing.
