Ireland Has Blistering Rain and Bitter Winds Set to Wreak Havoc Across This Sunday

It’s the final weekend of March, and if you thought Ireland was due a break in the madness—you were wrong. Today’s weather is an unforgiving mix of cold, relentless rain and bitter northwesterly winds sweeping across the country. While some parts of the east will just about cling to double-digit temperatures, the west will struggle to hit 8°C. Met Éireann has forecasted heavy outbreaks of rain, low visibility, and winds picking up in ferocity as the day drags on. Here’s the full national and regional breakdown for Sunday 23rd March:

National Outlook

Expect a cold and grey start across most counties. Rain will gradually push across the country from the southwest, bringing with it pulses of heavier precipitation—especially across Connacht, west Munster, and Leinster later in the day. The east may remain dry until afternoon, but don’t be fooled. Once the system hits, it sticks. Highs today will range from 9°C to 13°C in the east, while the west remains locked in a chillier pocket between 6°C and 8°C. Winds will start out light but will intensify as the day progresses, especially in the west, where strong northwesterlies will hit coastal areas.

By nightfall, rain continues its grip, but may ease slightly in some areas. Winds will remain fresh, and visibility will be poor at times due to mist, hill fog, and rainfall accumulation.

What to Expect

Expect road spray and localised flooding, particularly in counties Clare, Kerry, Limerick and Galway. Drivers are urged to slow down on motorways and minor roads. Poor visibility will also affect evening commutes. Farmers and outdoor workers should brace for wet and gusty conditions, particularly along Atlantic coasts.

Looking Ahead

The coming week shows no promise of dramatic improvement. While Monday might start off dry in parts of the east, more rain is in store from midweek as a new frontal system moves in. Keep your coats nearby.

Today’s Conditions Scream One Thing: Stay Indoors If You Can

If you’re heading out today, layer up and bring proper waterproofs. A jumper won’t cut it. The wind chill and bursts of heavy rain will soak through quickly, and if you’re near the coast, expect a raw bite in the breeze. It’s shaping up to be another miserable Irish weekend—and for those still holding out hope for a spring reprieve, it’s nowhere in sight yet.
