Cloudy skies over an Irish landscape with a hint of sun, depicting Ireland weather forecast

Ireland’s Weather Forecast Today

As Tuesday, August 18th begins in Ireland, many of us are probably wondering what the skies have in store. Will it be a day for the beach, or one best spent indoors with a cup of tea? I've checked Met Éireann's predictions, and it looks like we're in for a mixed bag, which, let's be honest, isn't exactly a surprise for August in Ireland.

The day starts cloudy and damp, with isolated showers scattered around the country. If you're heading out early, a light jacket might be a good idea. However, the morning should brighten up a bit, offering some welcome sunny spells. So, if you can grab a coffee outside or take a quick walk, late morning might be your best chance for some vitamin D.

But, as often happens here, the good weather won't last indefinitely. Cloud cover is expected to thicken again from the west as the afternoon goes on. This will bring more persistent rain and drizzle, especially through the evening. So, if you're planning anything outdoors for later today, make sure you have a backup plan. Perhaps that evening stroll should turn into an evening in with a good book.

Temperatures will reach highs of 16 to 21 degrees Celsius. These are pretty standard August temperatures, feeling mild enough when the sun appears, but perhaps a bit cooler under heavier cloud and rain. Winds will be light to moderate westerly, picking up a bit, becoming fresh at times, particularly along our western and northwestern coasts. Anyone living or visiting those areas might feel that breeze more keenly. This Irish weather forecast is certainly keeping us on our toes.

What to Expect Tonight

Tonight, cloudy conditions will continue, bringing scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. This rain will gradually clear to the east overnight, making way for clearer spells. However, scattered showers will follow, with some turning heavy in the west and north later. Lowest temperatures tonight will be between 11 and 14 degrees Celsius, making it a fairly mild night overall. Winds will be light to moderate southwest, feeling a bit fresher on the Atlantic coasts, which is to be expected given the weather patterns.

Looking Ahead to Wednesday

Wednesday, August 19th, isn't looking much better, I'm afraid. The morning will see widespread showers across the country. And these aren't just any showers; Met Éireann is warning that they could be heavy in places, with the potential for isolated thunderstorms. So, if you're planning to be out, a sturdy umbrella and perhaps some waterproof gear would be wise. The good news is that these showers are expected to become more scattered later in the evening, giving us a bit of a break.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be similar to today, ranging from 16 to 20 degrees Celsius. We'll also have moderate, occasionally fresh, west to southwest winds. It seems we're in for another day that requires some planning around the elements.

The Rest of the Week: A Glimmer of Hope?

The national outlook suggests that the rest of the week will start off quite breezy with widespread showers continuing. However, there's a silver lining here: it's expected to become brighter and drier from Friday onwards, with only occasional showers. This shift will also bring slightly fresher temperatures, keeping daytime highs in the mid to high teens. So, if you're dreaming of a drier weekend, there's a good chance you might get it.

Wednesday night will see some heavy showers initially, but these should ease and become less frequent as the night progresses, bringing some clear spells. Temperatures will drop to between 11 and 14 degrees Celsius, with moderate northerly winds, fresh near the coasts.

Thursday is expected to be a breezy day, offering sunny spells mixed with showers. These showers will become more widespread through the morning and afternoon, with some turning heavy, before becoming isolated by evening. Temperatures will be a bit cooler, ranging from 15 to 19 degrees Celsius, with moderate to fresh northerly winds. Thursday night looks to be drier for many, with clear spells and isolated light showers, mainly in the north. It will be a cooler night, with lows of 8 to 11 degrees, as northerly winds decrease.

Friday brings brighter conditions with spells of sunshine and well-scattered showers. Many places are expected to remain dry, which will be a welcome change. Highs will be between 14 and 19 degrees Celsius, with moderate northerly winds.

Saturday follows a similar pattern, promising a bright day with spells of sunshine and scattered light showers. Temperatures will range from 15 to 19 degrees Celsius, with light to moderate north to northwest winds.

Looking further ahead, Sunday and Monday are predicted to remain mostly dry with just a few showers. However, the forecast suggests that next week could potentially turn more unsettled as it progresses. Temperatures are expected to range from the mid-teens to low twenties.

So, while today and tomorrow are certainly leaning towards the damp side, the Irish weather forecast for the latter half of the week offers a bit more sunshine and drier conditions. It's a good reminder to always be prepared for anything when it comes to Irish weather. Keep an eye on the latest updates from Met Éireann (met.ie) as conditions can, and often do, change quickly.
