Ireland’s Weather Forecast: Friday 5 June
As Friday, June 5th, rolls in, itson.ie is here to give you the lowdown on Ireland's skies. If you were hoping for a glorious start to your summer weekend, you might need to adjust those expectations a bit. We're looking at a mixed bag today, and honestly, the weekend outlook doesn't exactly scream "barbecue weather."

We've all been there, haven't we? Waking up on a Friday, full of optimism, only to peer out the window and see grey skies. Today, however, there's a glimmer of hope for some. For a good chunk of the country, particularly the east and north, we're actually going to see some decent sunny spells for a while. It won't be as showery or as breezy as it has been recently, which is a small victory in itself. If you're in the east, you might even get away with staying dry for the most part. Enjoy it while it lasts, because things are set to change.
I find it fascinating how quickly the weather can shift here. One minute you're enjoying a bit of sun, the next you're reaching for your umbrella. That's exactly what's on the cards for the west and north today, where scattered showers are still very much in play. As the afternoon wears on, cloud cover will start to increase across the board. Then, the real change begins.
By evening, Munster is in for a wet and breezy ride. Rain, heavy in places, will push up from the southwest, making its presence felt. This wet spell won't be confined to Munster for long; it will also creep into southern parts of Leinster and Connacht before nightfall. So, if you're planning any outdoor activities this evening in those regions, consider moving them indoors. It's cool for early summer too, with temperatures generally sitting between 12 and 16 degrees. Some parts of the east might see a touch higher, but overall, it's not exactly balmy. Winds will be mostly moderate southerly, backing southeasterly later, and picking up to fresh and occasionally gusty in Munster and parts of south Leinster, getting stronger along some coastal areas.
Looking ahead to tonight, the rain is set to become widespread, meaning most of us will be hearing it drumming on our windows. It'll be heavy in some areas, especially in the south. We can also expect some mist and hill fog to develop, which always adds a certain atmospheric touch, doesn't it? The breezy conditions will continue with the rain, as east to southeast winds increase to moderate to fresh and occasionally gusty, strong along some coastal stretches. In inland parts of Munster, winds will ease for a bit before picking up again to moderate to fresh and occasionally gusty west to northwesterly later. Temperatures won't drop too low, staying between 8 and 12 degrees.
Now, let's talk about Saturday, because I know many of us are already thinking about the weekend. It's not looking like a perfect start, I'm afraid. Most of the country will wake up to a cloudy and wet morning, with more outbreaks of rain, which could be heavy for a while. However, there's a silver lining here. A clearance to mostly dry conditions, complete with some bright or sunny spells, will move into the southwest and west early in the morning. This drier weather will gradually extend across the country, with the last of the rain finally clearing from the east and northeast through the afternoon and early evening. So, while the morning might be a washout for many, the afternoon offers more promise.
But don't get too comfortable. As Saturday evening approaches, cloud will build again in the west, bringing with it more rain and drizzle. It's a bit of a tease, really. Highest temperatures for Saturday will be between 13 and 17 degrees. Winds will be mostly light to moderate cyclonic variable, fresh for a time in the east. Munster will see fresh to strong westerly winds for a period in the morning, becoming westerly generally as the rain clears, mostly moderate into the afternoon, then backing southwesterly and freshening along the west coast.
Looking further ahead, the general outlook is that we're in for an unsettled period. Rain or showers are expected each day, and it's going to be breezy at times. Saturday night will see outbreaks of rain, mainly for Atlantic and southern counties. The midlands and east might get some clear spells and mostly dry conditions, with temperatures not falling below 10 to 13 degrees.
Sunday looks like it starts with some early sunny spells in the east, but these will quickly give way to cloudier and wet conditions as rain becomes widespread, turning heavy at times. Drier and brighter weather will develop in the west and southwest later in the day, with highest temperatures reaching 14 to 18 or 19 degrees. Winds will be moderate to fresh southwesterly.
As for Monday, we're looking at sunny spells and well scattered showers, some of which could be heavy. Temperatures will be a bit cooler, between 13 and 16 degrees, with light to moderate westerly breezes. The indications for midweek suggest that this unsettled pattern will continue, with more showers or spells of rain and breezy conditions. Temperatures will generally hover between 13 and 16 degrees.
So, for those of us hoping for a heatwave to kick off June, it seems we'll have to wait a bit longer. This Ireland weather forecast paints a picture of typical Irish summer variability. It's the kind of weather that reminds you to always have a rain jacket handy, even if the sun is trying its best to peek through. Always a good idea to check the most up-to-date information directly from Met Éireann (https://www.met.ie) before you head out, as things can change quickly. It's just the way it goes here, isn't it?
