Ireland’s Friday Forecast: Showers and Cooler Temps

Today is Friday, May 8th, and it looks like we're in for a fairly typical Irish spring day – which means, of course, a bit of everything. If you're stepping out, be ready for some cloud and scattered showers, particularly across parts of Munster, Leinster, and east Ulster. We might even see the odd heavy downpour in those areas, just to keep things interesting.
We’re not talking about a washout by any means, but it's certainly not a day to leave the rain jacket at home. As the evening rolls in, those showers should become a bit more isolated, giving us a drier end to the day.
Temperature-wise, it's going to be on the cooler side. We’re looking at highs of 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. The wind will be light, mainly coming from the north or varying directions, so it shouldn't add too much of a chill factor, but you’ll definitely feel the difference if you’re used to warmer conditions.
What to Expect Today
For those living in or travelling through Munster, Leinster, or east Ulster, keep an eye on the sky. The showers are most likely to hit these regions. If you have plans outdoors, it's a good idea to have a backup plan or at least dress in layers and carry an umbrella. As we move later into the day, the chances of getting caught in a shower will lessen, which is good news for any evening plans.
The temperature range of 10 to 15 degrees means it will feel fresh, particularly if the sun isn't making much of an appearance. This isn't unusual for early May in Ireland; we often get these cooler spells before things really start to warm up.
Tonight’s Outlook
Tonight, the general picture is mainly dry. We should see some clear spells, giving us a chance to glimpse the stars, though some cloud might hang around in the southern parts of the country.
Temperatures will drop overnight, ranging from 3 to 8 degrees Celsius. So, it will be quite cool, especially in areas with clearer skies. A light to moderate northerly wind will be present, but it shouldn't be too impactful. If you’re out late, a decent jacket will be essential.
Looking Ahead to the Weekend
We all look forward to the weekend, and it seems Saturday, May 9th, is shaping up to be mostly dry for the majority of the country. We can expect some sunny spells, which will be a welcome change after today’s cloudier conditions.
However, if you're near the south-west coast, particularly in southern parts, there might be some cloudier conditions bringing a little patchy rain. It won't be anything significant, but something to be aware of if you're planning a coastal walk or an outing in that area.
Saturday will feel breezy, with a moderate to fresh northerly wind. Temperatures will remain similar to today, between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. So, while it's drier, it won't necessarily feel much warmer.
Beyond Saturday: A Glimpse into Next Week
Saturday night looks mainly dry with clear spells. Again, some cloud could linger in the far south for a bit. It’s going to be rather chilly overnight, with lows of 3 to 7 degrees in moderate northerly winds.
Sunday promises plenty of dry weather and sunny spells. Cloud will start to increase in the north as the day progresses, with a possibility of isolated showers there. Highs on Sunday will be between 10 and 14 degrees, with the coolest temperatures expected in the north. A moderate northerly breeze will be present.
Sunday night will see cloud and light showers moving into northern parts, while the rest of the country stays dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures will be 3 to 8 degrees in light north to northwest winds.
Monday will bring a good deal of cloud, but also some bright or sunny intervals. Light showers will track southwards over the country. Highest temperatures will be 12 to 14 degrees in light to moderate north to northwesterly winds.
Tuesday looks like it will have some patchy light rain or drizzle, mainly impacting parts of the north and northeast. It should become mainly dry in the afternoon with better sunny spells developing. Moderate west to north-west winds will bring highs of 12 to 15 degrees.
Currently, the outlook for Wednesday suggests a cool and blustery day. Showers, some of them heavy, are expected to feed down from the north. So, it seems like this changeable spring weather is set to continue for a while.
