Ireland Weather Forecast: Thursday 15 October

Clearing Skies and Cooler Temperatures Ahead

Good morning, Ireland! If you're waking up to rain, especially in Munster, Leinster, or east Ulster, you're not alone. Thursday, October 15th, starts off damp for many, with some heavy rain. But don't let that get you down too much. We're looking at a mixed bag today, with some clear improvements as the day goes on.

Today's Breakdown: A Tale of Two Halves

The morning hours will see that cloudy, wet blanket slowly start to lift. Drier conditions are already making their way in the west and northwest, and this relief will gradually spread southeast through the morning and into the afternoon. This means that while some of us are still dealing with the wet weather, others will start to see welcome sunny spells.

It wouldn't be an Irish forecast without a shower or two, though, would it? So, expect some scattered showers later in the afternoon and evening. These will mostly affect the north and west, with a few potentially heavy downpours further north.

Temperature-wise, we're looking at highs of 12 to 16 degrees Celsius. It's a bit breezy this morning in parts of the east and south, with moderate to fresh and occasionally gusty south to southwest winds. However, these will soon give way to light to moderate westerly winds across all areas. Just a heads-up for those on the northwest coast: winds might pick up a bit there, becoming a touch fresher at times.

What to Expect Tonight: A Chill in the Air

As Thursday ends, tonight will bring a mix of clear spells and showers. The showers will mostly be in our western and northern counties, and some could be heavy. There's even a slight chance of thunder in the north, so keep an ear out.

It's going to be cooler than recent nights, so if you're planning any evening activities, you might want an extra layer. Lowest temperatures will range from 3 to 8 degrees Celsius. Winds will be mostly light to moderate southwest to west or variable breezes, although they'll remain fresh westerly in western and northwestern coastal parts.

Looking Ahead to Friday: Sunshine and Lingering Showers

Friday, October 16th, promises plenty of sunshine interspersed with scattered showers. The showers will be most widespread in the morning, particularly across the north and west, where some could be heavy. That slight chance of thunder in the north might even carry over from Thursday night.

However, as the afternoon progresses, those showers will become more isolated. They'll mainly be confined to parts of Ulster and Leinster before eventually dying away later in the day. It will be cooler than we've experienced lately, with highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees. Winds will shift to mostly moderate northwesterly through the morning, increasing fresh for a time in western and northern coastal parts, but generally easing back to light to moderate by the evening.

The Weekend Outlook: Settled, Sunny, and Chilly

We've all been hoping for a bit of a break, and it looks like the weekend is set to deliver. High pressure is moving in, meaning a settled, mainly dry weekend with some lovely spells of sunshine. This is great news for anyone planning to get out and about, perhaps for a walk in one of Ireland's beautiful national parks or a visit to a local market.

However, don't pack away the warm jumpers just yet. It's going to be cool, with some chilly nights. We could even see a touch of frost in places, along with some mist and fog developing overnight and lingering into the mornings.

Friday night will be dry and mostly clear, apart from a few isolated light showers at first in northern coastal areas. Lowest temperatures will drop to 1 to 5 degrees, possibly even reaching freezing locally, so be prepared for that touch of frost and potential mist or fog patches.

Saturday looks like a real winner. Any mist and fog patches will clear through the morning, leaving a dry, bright day with lots of sunshine. There might be a little more cloud in the northwest at times, but generally, it's looking good. Highs will be around 11 to 13 or 14 degrees in light variable or northeasterly breezes.

Saturday night will be another dry, chilly one. Expect mist and fog patches to develop as skies remain mostly clear and winds stay light or variable. Lowest temperatures will again be around 1 to 5 degrees, with that possibility of local frost.

Sunday will see mist and fog gradually clearing through the morning, giving way to a dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Temperatures will be similar to Saturday, around 11 to 13 degrees in light variable breezes.

Into Next Week: Holding Steady, Then Uncertainty

Monday won't see much change, with mist and fog clearing to another mainly dry, bright day with sunny spells. There might be a little more cloud early in the day in northwestern coastal parts, with the odd spot of drizzle possible, and a chance of a few isolated light showers drifting in from the east. Highs of 11 to 13 degrees in mostly light to moderate east to southeasterly breezes, possibly a touch fresher in northwestern coastal parts.

Looking further ahead into Tuesday, the forecast becomes a bit more uncertain. While high pressure might continue to dominate, current indications suggest we could see some cloud and outbreaks of rain moving up from the southeast for a time, followed by sunny spells and showers. If this more unsettled weather does arrive, it would also bring slightly milder temperatures, especially at night. Highs of 11 to 14 degrees are expected, with mostly moderate southeasterly winds, a little fresher in southern and southeastern coastal parts.

By Wednesday, that uncertainty continues. Current indications suggest outbreaks of heavy showery rain could move up from the south, with the chance of a few thundery bursts. Temperatures are forecast to be between 11 and 15 degrees.

So, while Thursday and Friday bring a mix of wet and dry conditions, the weekend is shaping up to be quite pleasant, albeit cool.
