Ireland’s Weather Forecast: Wednesday 19 August
Wednesday's Mixed Bag: Sun, Showers, and a Gentle Breeze
Here we are, another Wednesday in August, and if you were hoping for a dramatic shift in our summer weather, you might be a little disappointed. Today, Wednesday, August 19th, is shaping up to be a fairly typical Irish summer's day: a bit of everything, really. Met Éireann is forecasting a familiar pattern of sunny spells punctuated by scattered showers. And just to keep things interesting, some of those showers could turn out to be quite heavy in places.

It's the kind of day where you'll want to keep a light jacket or an umbrella handy, even if the sun is beaming down one minute. We all know how quickly things can change here. Temperatures across the country are looking to be in the range of 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. So, it's mild enough to be comfortable outdoors, but certainly not scorching. The winds will be light to moderate, coming from the west to southwest, though they might pick up a bit, becoming fresh and gusty at times. This means if you're planning any outdoor activities, especially near the coast, you'll feel that breeze.
What to Expect as Wednesday Turns to Night
As we move from day into Wednesday night, the pattern largely holds. We're looking at a continuation of scattered showers mixed with those welcome clear spells. If you're in the north or northeast, particularly early in the night, be aware that some of those showers are expected to be heavy. So, if you're out and about, maybe heading to an evening event or just enjoying a late stroll, keep an eye on the sky.
Night-time temperatures aren't dipping too dramatically, staying between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius. It's a mild enough night for mid-August, thankfully. The winds will shift slightly, coming from the west to northwest, remaining light to moderate. Again, they could occasionally increase, bringing those fresh and gusty conditions, particularly in exposed areas. We've all had those nights where the wind whistles a little tune outside the window, haven't we?
Looking Ahead: Thursday and the Weekend Outlook
Now, let's cast our gaze forward a bit. What does Thursday, August 20th, have in store for us? More of the same, in essence. Met Éireann is forecasting sunny spells and scattered showers once again. The main difference is that the heaviest of these showers might be more concentrated in the east this time around. Temperatures will mirror Wednesday's, staying between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. A moderate to fresh northerly breeze will be a noticeable feature, so if you're out on the east coast, you'll definitely feel that cooler air coming in.
Beyond Thursday, the national outlook suggests a bit of a mixed bag before things potentially settle down. Thursday night will see clear spells and scattered showers, primarily in the north and west. Temperatures will drop a bit more, ranging from 7 to 11 degrees, with light to moderate northwesterly winds.
Friday brings more sunny spells and scattered showers. These will start mainly in the north and west but are expected to become more widespread as the day progresses. Highest temperatures will be between 14 and 19 degrees, with light to moderate northerly winds. Friday night looks largely dry with long clear spells, though a few showers might linger in the north and west. Lowest temperatures will be 6 to 11 degrees.
A Glimmer of Hope for the Weekend
Now for some potentially good news for those weekend plans. Saturday is looking like it will be mostly dry with some pleasant sunny spells. Temperatures will be a bit cooler, 15 to 19 degrees, with light and variable winds. This sounds like a perfect day for getting out and enjoying some of our beautiful scenery, perhaps a walk through a national park or a visit to a local market.
Saturday night will be largely dry with long clear spells. However, with near calm conditions, we can expect some mist and fog to develop. So, if you're an early riser on Sunday, be prepared for potentially hazy starts, especially in rural areas.
Sunday continues the trend of improvement. The mist and fog should gradually clear, leading to a largely dry and bright day. There might be isolated showers, but nothing too disruptive, I'd imagine. Highest temperatures will once again be in the 15 to 19 degrees range, with light and variable winds. This is the kind of weekend weather we all hope for in August, offering a chance to truly relax and enjoy the tail end of summer.
Looking further ahead into next week, Monday is also expected to be largely dry and bright. However, Met Éireann suggests that the weather could turn unsettled again from Tuesday onwards. So, make the most of the weekend and early next week, as it seems our typical Irish summer variability isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
It's Ireland's charm that even with a forecast of "scattered showers," we still find ways to enjoy our days. Whether you're planning a trip to the coast, a hike in the mountains, or just a quiet day at home, knowing what to expect from the skies is always half the battle. For the most up-to-date information, it's always worth checking the Met Éireann website directly. They are, after all, the experts on our ever-changing skies. So, grab your brolly, embrace the sun when it peeks out, and enjoy your Wednesday!
