This month is carving out a savage reputation and today is only adding to the misery. With cool temperatures and miserable conditions, it’s another brutal day that even the hardiest Irish spirits will struggle through. Here’s the full lowdown.

Today’s Quick Overview in Ireland

Weather ElementDetails
RainPersistent and heavy showers across much of the country
Temperature7°C to 12°C
WindsFresh to strong northwest breezes
ConditionsWet, cloudy, risk of localised flooding
NighttimeShowers easing, cold with lows of 3°C to 6°C

Morning: A Cold, Wet Kickstart

From early morning, expect no reprieve. Outbreaks of heavy rain dominate the scene, especially across Connacht, Ulster, and parts of Munster. The southeast fares slightly better initially but it’s a temporary win. Conditions are bitter for April – with temperatures lingering around 7°C to 9°C – and fresh northwest winds making it feel even colder. The chance of spot flooding is real, especially on already saturated ground, and coastal areas can expect rough driving conditions with misty spray.

Visibility across the country is poor, with patches of mist clinging stubbornly to higher ground and river valleys.

Midday: Holding On For Dear Life

The lunchtime window offers little comfort. Showers remain widespread and heavy, especially through the Midlands and western coastal counties. Some thunder and hail are possible in isolated bursts. Roads are treacherous, and anyone brave enough for Sunday events outdoors will likely be soaked to the skin. Winds from the northwest freshen further along exposed coasts, adding a nasty, biting chill even where rain momentarily eases. It’s a battle between cloud and short, brief sunny spells – but rain wins out most places.

Top temperatures barely scratch 11°C or 12°C in the warmest inland spots like Offaly, Laois, or parts of Tipperary.

Afternoon: Slight Let-up But Still Miserable

From mid-afternoon, the intensity of the rain finally starts to weaken – but not before one last hammering in the south and east. Munster and parts of south Leinster will see spells of drier weather, but the west and northwest cling stubbornly to passing heavy showers. Sunshine attempts to break through in brief windows over Connacht, but most people will just notice the biting wind.

Flooding risk peaks mid-to-late afternoon around already drenched areas in Mayo, Clare, and parts of Galway. Farmers and rural communities should be alert to waterlogged fields and difficult conditions for livestock and machinery.

Evening: Some Hope on the Horizon

Showers gradually become lighter and more isolated into Sunday evening. Clear spells will develop, particularly across eastern and midland counties. The temperature dips sharply after sunset, with overnight lows of 3°C to 6°C expected. Light frost could even creep into sheltered inland areas overnight.

Road surfaces could become slick as moisture lingers and temperatures fall. It’ll be a night best spent indoors, drying out after another lashing of grim Irish spring rain.

Coastal Conditions: Stay Well Back

Today is no day for coastal adventures. Waves will crash along exposed Atlantic coastlines with dangerous conditions for swimmers, boaters, and walkers. Moderate to strong northwest winds will whip up the seas, and any cliffside routes could be hazardous. Yellow warnings are possible if gusts strengthen during the day.
