Cork Tops the Charts in Ireland’s 2025 Blue Flag and Green Coast Award
Ireland’s commitment to environmental stewardship and coastal preservation has reached new heights in 2025, with a record number of beaches and marinas earning the prestigious Blue Flag status. The Blue Flag, an internationally recognized eco-label, is awarded to beaches and marinas that meet stringent criteria for water quality, safety, environmental education, and information.

This year, 89 beaches and 10 marinas across the country have been honored with the Blue Flag, surpassing the previous record of 85 beaches. Additionally, 70 beaches received the Green Coast Award, which recognizes beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality, and natural beauty.
Cork Leads the Way
County Cork has emerged as the standout performer in the 2025 awards, securing a total of 27 accolades, the highest combined number of Blue Flags and Green Coast Awards in the country. This includes 11 Blue Flags awarded to beaches managed by Cork County Council and two awarded to marinas: Kinsale Yacht Club and the Royal Cork Yacht Club.
Furthermore, Cork has been awarded 14 Green Coast Awards, more than any other county. Notably, Fountainstown and Inchydoney East beaches achieved dual recognition, receiving both the Blue Flag and Green Coast Award, underscoring their exceptional standards.
National Highlights and Notable Achievements
While Cork leads in total awards, County Kerry boasts the highest number of Blue Flags, with 15 beaches recognized. Donegal follows closely with 14 Blue Flags, reflecting the widespread excellence of Ireland’s coastal regions .
Several beaches have regained their Blue Flag status after previous lapses, including Cappagh Pier in County Clare, Céibh an Spidéal in County Galway, Ballymoney North Beach in County Wexford, and Tramore and Dunmore East in County Waterford. These reinstatements highlight successful efforts to improve and maintain high environmental standards.
Keel Beach on Achill Island in County Mayo continues its remarkable streak, earning the Blue Flag for the 37th consecutive year, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to excellence.
The Significance of the Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards
The Blue Flag programme, managed in Ireland by An Taisce, serves as a benchmark for environmental quality and safety at beaches and marinas. To qualify, sites must meet comprehensive criteria, including water quality testing, environmental education initiatives, and the provision of necessary services and safety measures.
The Green Coast Award complements the Blue Flag by recognizing beaches that, while not meeting all Blue Flag criteria, are of high environmental quality and natural beauty. These awards encourage community involvement and the protection of Ireland’s unique coastal heritage.
Community Efforts and Government Support
The success of the 2025 awards is attributed to the collaborative efforts of local authorities, community groups, and volunteers dedicated to preserving Ireland’s coastal environments. Minister for Housing, Local Government, and Heritage, James Browne, acknowledged these contributions, stating:
“Great credit must go to local authorities, An Taisce, coastal communities, and particularly all those local volunteers who have worked tirelessly around the country to keep so many of our coastal areas, beaches, and marinas in pristine condition for us all to enjoy.”
Cathy Baxter, Director of Education and Community Action at An Taisce, also praised the collective efforts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards and community engagement in environmental conservation.
Looking Ahead
The record-breaking achievements of 2025 reflect Ireland’s dedication to environmental excellence and sustainable tourism. As the country continues to prioritize the health and beauty of its coastal regions, these awards serve as both recognition of past efforts and motivation for future initiatives.
Visitors and residents alike are encouraged to explore and enjoy the award-winning beaches and marinas, experiencing firsthand the natural splendor and community spirit that define Ireland’s coastline.
