This isn't just casual talk. A high-level delegation, led by New Mexico's Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, met with our Minister for Energy Darragh O'Brien, Minister of State Neale Richmond, and Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) chief executive David Kelly last week. The purpose was to discuss importing this specific fuel. This move has significant implications for our energy policy, our environmental commitments, and our principles.

The Urgency of Energy Security

Let's be clear why this is even being discussed. Ireland is in a difficult position. We rely on natural gas pipelines from the UK for almost 80% of our natural gas needs. This heavy dependency makes us vulnerable to disruptions. We're also breaking EU law, as one of only six EU countries without an emergency gas reserve. They said discussions "centred on establishing a long-term supply relationship as Ireland's last domestic gasfield nears depletion." Our leaders, they claimed, are "now openly acknowledging that the energy transition will take longer than planned and emphasising the need for reliable baseload supply during this period." It sounds like they're offering us a solution, or at least, a very large gas tank.

The Fracking Elephant in the Room

Here's where it gets complicated. The gas in question is fracked gas. For those unfamiliar, fracking (or hydraulic fracturing) involves drilling deep into the earth and injecting high-pressure fluid to fracture shale rock, releasing natural gas. It's a method that has been banned in many countries, including Ireland since 2017, due to environmental concerns. It's seen as harmful to the environment and at odds with climate policies.
