Ireland’s Monday Weather: Rain, Showers, and Mild Temperatures
It's the first day of June, and if you're hoping for an instant switch to glorious summer sunshine across Ireland, you might need to temper those expectations a bit. We're kicking off the month with a rather unsettled outlook, a pattern that, according to Met Éireann, looks set to stick with us for most of this week. So, grab your umbrellas, even if it feels a bit optimistic to call it summer just yet.

Monday's Mixed Bag: Rain Kicks Off June
This morning, many of us woke up to a rather dull start. Rain and drizzle have been making their way across the country from the southwest. For those in the south and southwest, it's been a bit heavier, with even a chance of an isolated thunderstorm. I don't know about you, but a thunderstorm on June 1st feels less like summer and more like… well, just another day in Ireland, doesn't it?
Adding to the morning gloom, some mist and fog have lingered in parts, making early commutes a bit more challenging. However, there's a little bit of hope on the horizon for the afternoon. We're expecting the rain to clear somewhat, giving way to scattered showers. "Scattered showers" is classic Irish weather speak for "you might get wet, you might not, best be prepared for both." Some of these showers, particularly in the east, could still be on the heavier side.
Despite the damp start and ongoing showers, temperatures are actually looking quite mild for the time of year. We're talking about highs of 14 to 20 degrees Celsius. That's a decent range, and if you catch a dry spell with a bit of sunshine, it will feel quite pleasant. Winds will be light to moderate, coming from the southwest.
What to Expect Tonight
As we head into Monday night, don't put those rain jackets away just yet. It's looking like a generally cloudy night, with occasional clear spells – those are the moments we'll be clinging to, I imagine. Scattered showers will continue, and yes, some of them could still be heavy. Overnight temperatures aren't dipping too much, staying between 9 and 12 degrees Celsius, with a light southwesterly breeze. So, a mild night, but definitely one where you'll want the windows closed if you're not a fan of the sound of rain.
Looking Ahead to Tuesday: More of the Same
Tuesday isn't bringing any dramatic shifts in the weather pattern. Expect another largely cloudy day. If you're hoping for some sunshine, your best bet will be in the east of the country. Scattered showers will continue to spread from the west, and again, some of these could be heavy. There's even a chance of an isolated thunderstorm popping up in the east and northeast. By Tuesday evening, however, the showers are expected to become more isolated, which is a small mercy. Maximum temperatures on Tuesday will be a little cooler than Monday, ranging from 14 to 18 degrees, with light to moderate westerly winds.
An Unsettled Start to June
This unsettled weather isn't just a one or two-day affair. Met Éireann's national outlook suggests that the first week of June is going to remain rather changeable. We're looking at rain or showers pretty much every day, and it's going to be breezy at times too.
Tuesday night, for instance, starts off dry for most, with some clear spells and isolated showers. But, true to form, cloud will thicken from the west overnight, bringing more rain and drizzle to most areas by morning. Temperatures will be similar to Monday night, between 9 and 12 degrees, with southerly winds picking up a bit.
Wednesday looks like another breezy day. We'll start with rain and drizzle, which should clear to showers and sunny spells through the morning. But don't get too comfortable, as a longer spell of rain is expected to develop in the south and southwest later in the day. Temperatures will be between 14 and 18 degrees, with moderate to fresh southwest winds.
Wednesday night will be cloudy with more showers, and that longer spell of rain in the south might still be hanging around. Lowest temperatures will be 9 to 11 degrees, with moderate southwest winds veering westerly and increasing overnight.
Thursday is set to be cooler and blustery, with widespread showers and those welcome sunny breaks. Highs will only reach 13 to 16 degrees, with fresh westerly winds making it feel a bit nippy. Friday continues the trend of scattered showers, though the east and northeast might see longer dry spells. Temperatures will be 12 to 16 degrees with moderate southerly winds.
And as for next weekend? Well, it's looking like more of the same unsettled conditions, with rain or showers and temperatures in the mid to high teens.
It seems like summer in Ireland is taking its sweet time to arrive this year. While we often joke about our changeable weather, there's something about the first week of June bringing consistent rain that makes you sigh a little. It doesn't mean we can't enjoy the milder temperatures when they appear, but it certainly means keeping an eye on the forecast and having a plan B for outdoor activities.
For the most up-to-date information, it's always a good idea to check the official Met Éireann website (www.met.ie). They provide detailed daily forecasts and national outlooks that can help you plan your week, rain or shine (or, more likely, rain and shine). Let's hope for some more consistent sunshine as the month progresses!
