Ireland’s Oldest Person, Ruby Druce, Passes Away at 109
Ireland mourns the loss of its oldest resident, Ruby Druce, who passed away peacefully at her home in Castlefinn, County Donegal, at the remarkable age of 109. Born on December 31, 1915, Ruby’s life spanned over a century, during which she witnessed monumental global events, including two World Wars and two pandemics.

A Life of Resilience and Dedication of Ruby Druce
Ruby was the eldest of five children born to George and Elizabeth Crawford. At the tender age of 14, she began working at Porter’s Shirt Factory, dedicating 48 years to the company. In 1956, she married her childhood sweetheart, Jim Druce; however, their time together was cut short when Jim passed away 14 years later.
Throughout her life, Ruby faced numerous challenges with unwavering strength. She lived through the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, during which she lost both a baby sister and a younger brother in the same week. Remarkably, she also contracted COVID-19 in 2023 and recovered, showcasing her resilience.
Secrets to Longevity
Ruby attributed her long life to three key practices: hard work, regular walking, and a daily capsule of cod liver oil. She was a lifelong non-smoker and abstained from alcohol, except for a single sip of poitín given to her by her father during the Spanish Flu to alleviate her symptoms.
A Community Treasure
Known for her vibrant spirit, Ruby was deeply cherished in her community. She lived independently until the age of 98, maintaining her daily walks and household. After a fall, she moved in with her niece, Margo Butler, in Letterkenny, where she resided for ten years. Following Margo’s passing, Ruby returned to Castlefinn to live with another niece, Carmel Harran, and her husband, Martin.
Ruby’s love for music, particularly for singer Daniel O’Donnell, was well-known. Daniel frequently called her on her birthdays, and in May 2024, he and his wife, Majella, paid her a surprise visit, much to her delight. In 2022, Ruby had the honor of switching on the Christmas lights in Castlefinn, a testament to her esteemed place in the hearts of locals.
Celebrating Milestones
Ruby celebrated her 109th birthday on December 31, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. She was the proud recipient of nine commemorative coins from the President of Ireland, marking each of her birthdays from 100 onwards. At her centenary, she generously donated the presidential cheque she received to local charities, reflecting her benevolent nature.
Final Farewell
Ruby’s funeral services are scheduled as follows:
- Reposing: At her niece Carmel’s residence in Castlefinn (F93 E67R) on Friday, March 21, from 6 pm to 9 pm, and on Saturday from 12 noon to 9 pm.
- Funeral Mass: Sunday, March 23, at 12 pm in St. Mary’s Church, Castlefinn, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
The family has requested family time on the morning of the funeral and has asked for family flowers only. Donations in lieu can be made to Donegal Carers, reflecting Ruby’s lifelong commitment to community and care.
A Legacy of Strength and Kindness
Ruby’s life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and community spirit. Her journey from the early 20th century into the modern age encompassed vast changes, yet she remained a constant pillar of strength and kindness. Her legacy serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the profound impact of a life well-lived.
