Ireland's Sunday Weather: A Mixed Bag with More to Come

It's Sunday, May 17th, and if you were hoping for a glorious, sun-drenched start to your weekend, I'm afraid I have some news for you. Today's weather across Ireland looks set to be a bit of a mixed bag, leaning heavily towards the "wet and breezy" side of things. It's the kind of day that makes you wonder if spring is going to properly show its face at all, or if we're just in for a prolonged period of meteorological indecision.

From what we're seeing, the west of the country got an early start on the showers this morning, and those are quickly making their way eastward. By the time you're reading this, it's likely they'll be pretty widespread. And we're not talking about a gentle sprinkling either; expect some of these to be heavy and persistent. There's even a chance of thunderstorms and a bit of hail thrown in for good measure. So, if you're out and about, a proper waterproof jacket is going to be your best friend. An umbrella might put up a good fight, but I wouldn't bet on it winning against some of the downpours we're expecting.

The Day's Conditions

Generally, it's going to be a cloudy day. We might get a few peeks of sunshine here and there, but don't hold your breath for extended periods of blue sky. It will be breezy too, with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds picking up. These winds will certainly add to the chill factor, making those already modest temperatures feel even cooler.

Speaking of temperatures, the mercury isn't going to be climbing very high today. We're looking at highest temperatures of between 9 and 12 degrees Celsius. That's definitely on the cooler side for mid-May, reminding us that while the calendar says spring, the weather often has other ideas. It really makes you appreciate those rare, truly warm days we get, doesn't it?

As the day draws to a close and we head into tonight, things should calm down a bit for most of the country. Showers are expected to ease off early on, bringing some drier conditions and clear spells. However, the southwest looks like it might hold onto the cloud for a bit longer, with those showers potentially giving way to outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

Overnight, temperatures will drop to between 2 and 6 degrees, with the southwest remaining the mildest. Keep an eye out for patches of mist and fog forming in light westerly or variable breezes, especially if you're planning an early start tomorrow.

Looking Ahead: Monday and Beyond

So, what's in store for us as we roll into Monday, May 18th? Well, we might get a brief reprieve. Most of the country is forecast for a dry and bright start, with those patches of mist and fog I just mentioned. It could be a nice window to get out for a walk before things change.

Unfortunately, that change is on its way. Cloud and rain, starting in the southwest, are expected to spread northeastwards through the morning and afternoon. This rain could turn heavy at times, so while Ulster and north Leinster might stay dry for much of the day, the rest of us should prepare for more wet weather. Temperatures on Monday will be a little milder, ranging from 11 to 14 degrees, with moderate to fresh south to southeast winds.

Looking further into the week, the general outlook remains unsettled. It seems we're in for a period of continuing rain or showers. The good news, if you can call it that, is that it's expected to gradually become milder as the week progresses, thanks to a southwesterly airflow.

Monday night will be wet, with widespread outbreaks of rain clearing northeastwards, followed by scattered showers from the southwest that could be heavy. It will be milder overnight, with temperatures not falling below 8 to 11 degrees.

Tuesday looks set to be cloudy for most, with widespread showers that could again turn heavy and persistent. It will be breezy, with moderate, sometimes fresh, southwest winds, and temperatures ranging from 11 to 15 degrees. Tuesday night continues the cloudy, showery theme, with lowest temperatures between 8 and 11 degrees.

By Wednesday, we might see a bit more variety, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered light showers initially. However, cloud will build from the southwest through the day, and showers will ease. Temperatures will climb a bit more, reaching 13 to 17 degrees, with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

Thursday brings a duller day for most, with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Expect some mist and hill fog too. This day could be the warmest of the lot, with temperatures between 14 and 18 or even 19 degrees in mostly moderate southerly winds.

As for Friday and the weekend, there's still a bit of uncertainty, as is often the case with long-range forecasts, but more rain and showers are likely.

It's clear that this week's weather in Ireland is going to keep us on our toes. From widespread showers and breezy conditions today to a gradually milder but still unsettled week ahead, it's a good reminder to always check the latest forecast before making any plans.
