Ireland’s Weather Outlook: Warming Up for Late April

Sunny skies over a green Irish landscape, showing the Ireland weather outlook

Today, April 22nd, 2026, marks a bit of a turning point in our Irish weather. We’ve been through a bit of a mixed bag lately, haven't we? One minute you’re reaching for the umbrella, the next you’re wondering if you should have brought a light jacket. But as we look at the forecast, there’s a distinct feeling that things are finally, properly, looking up. And honestly, it’s about time.

We're kicking off Wednesday, April 22nd, with a day that promises to be mostly dry and breezy. For most of the country, that means variable cloud cover, but with some welcome spells of sunshine breaking through. You might see a stray shower or two, but nothing to write home about. Now, if you’re down in the southwest, it’s a slightly different story. Expect a bit more cloud, and possibly some patchy drizzle or light rain, especially right along the coast. Those easterly winds will be moderate to fresh for the most part, but they'll pick up to strong at times, particularly along our eastern, southern, and southwestern coasts. Temperature-wise, we’re looking at highs of 11 to 14 degrees, with the west of the country seeing the milder conditions. Not exactly scorching, but certainly comfortable enough for getting out and about if you layer up.

As Wednesday transitions into tonight, the forecast remains largely dry. We’ll have variable cloud overhead, and it’s going to be a rather cool night, with temperatures dropping to between 3 and 7 degrees. The southwest, however, will hold onto a bit more warmth, thanks to a moderating easterly breeze. So, if you’re planning an evening stroll, make sure you’ve got something warm on.

But here's where it gets interesting, and frankly, a bit exciting. Thursday, April 23rd, is shaping up to be a truly lovely day. We’re talking dry conditions, plenty of sunny spells, and moderate to fresh southeasterly breezes. The real headline here is the temperature: it’s going to be very mild, with highs of 14 to 17 degrees. The best of that warmth will be felt further west. This is the kind of weather that makes you start thinking about shedding a layer or two and perhaps even dusting off the barbecue, even if it's just for show.

Looking at the national outlook, the overarching theme for the next while is high pressure. This is good news for those of us who appreciate a bit of settled weather. We’re expecting mostly settled conditions, and crucially, a warming trend. While there might be the odd shower here and there, the general picture is one of increasing warmth and sunshine.

Friday looks like another cracker. It’s forecast to be a dry, fine, and sunny day for most of us, with no more than moderate southeasterly breezes. This is where the temperatures really start to climb. We’re talking warm conditions in the sunshine, with afternoon highs of 14 to a rather glorious 19 or even 20 degrees. Again, the best of these values are expected further west. However, a small note of caution: some thundery showers might drift into our southwest counties. So, while it’s mostly good news, it's always wise to keep an eye on local conditions.

The weekend is also looking promising, which is fantastic news for anyone planning to enjoy what Ireland has to offer. We’re expecting it to remain mostly dry, with light south or southeasterly winds and good spells of sunshine. Crucially, temperatures will be above average for late April, with highs ranging from 14 to 20 degrees. This is proper spring weather, the kind that makes you feel optimistic and ready for summer. Just like Friday, there’s a small chance that some showers could feed into parts of the west, but it shouldn't spoil the overall picture.

Current indications for Monday suggest more of the same, which is a rare treat in itself. We're looking at sunny spells and continuing dry conditions, apart from a few potential showers in parts of the west and north. Highs are expected to be between 15 and 18 degrees, with the east of the country enjoying the warmest conditions.

So, what does all this mean for us? It means that after a somewhat typical, unpredictable Irish spring, we are finally entering a period of much more pleasant weather. This Ireland weather outlook is certainly something to celebrate. It’s the perfect time to get out and explore, whether that’s a walk along the coast, a hike in the mountains, or simply enjoying a cuppa in the garden. The longer days combined with these rising temperatures create an ideal environment for enjoying our beautiful country.

For anyone who has been waiting for the weather to turn before making plans, now is definitely the time to start thinking about what you want to do. Whether it’s visiting one of Ireland’s many historical sites, exploring a national park, or simply enjoying the local amenities, the next few days offer a fantastic opportunity.

Always a good idea to double-check the very latest forecast from a reliable source like Met Éireann as conditions can, as we know, change. But for now, let's look forward to some truly lovely late April weather. It’s been a long time coming, and we certainly deserve it.
