Ireland's Weather Today: A Mixed Bag Before a Warmer Weekend

It's Wednesday, May 20th, and if you're looking out your window this morning, you might be thinking, "What's the story with the weather today?" It's a classic Irish spring day, really. We've got a bit of everything on the menu, but don't despair, because the long-range forecast is showing some genuinely lovely signs for the weekend. So, grab a cuppa, and let's break down what Met Éireann is telling us for today and the coming days.

Clouds and sun over a green Irish landscape on May 20th

Today's Outlook: Sun, Showers, and Southwesterly Shifts

For most of us starting Wednesday, we're seeing variable cloud cover. That means a mix of bright spells, maybe even some decent sunshine peeking through, interspersed with those familiar Irish clouds. Don't put away the sunglasses just yet, but keep the jacket handy. We're expecting just a few light showers today, nothing too dramatic, more of a sprinkle than a deluge.

The big change for today comes later in the afternoon and into the evening. Cloud will start to thicken from the southwest, and that's our cue for outbreaks of rain and drizzle. This wetter weather is set to push into Munster, south Connacht, and southwest Leinster by nightfall. So, if you're in those regions, your evening plans might need to account for a bit of dampness.

Temperatures today are looking pretty decent, ranging from 14 to 18 degrees Celsius. That's a comfortable enough spring day, all things considered. Winds will be light to moderate southwesterly, shifting to southerly this evening as that cloud and rain begin to move in.

Tonight: Rain Spreads, Mist Descends

As we head into Wednesday night, that rain and drizzle we mentioned for the southwest will continue its march northeastwards, eventually extending across much of the country. It won't be a constant downpour everywhere, thankfully. The rain and drizzle will become patchier as the night progresses.

Expect some mist and fog, especially on hills and along the coast. This is pretty typical for a mild, damp night in Ireland. And mild it will be, with lowest temperatures hovering between 11 and 13 degrees. Light to moderate, occasionally fresh, southerly winds will keep things moving.

Looking Ahead to Thursday: Patchy Rain, Then a Northern Push

If you're planning for Thursday, May 21st, expect a similar start to today. Mostly cloudy with patchy rain, drizzle, and mist. It sounds a bit dreary, I know, but stick with it. The afternoon brings a more persistent spell of rain, which will spread northwards across the country.

However, there's a silver lining. Drier, clearer conditions are expected to follow from the south, bringing with them some hazy sunshine in places. Of course, this is Ireland, so the west and southwest might just hold onto those mostly cloudy and misty conditions with patchy drizzle.

Temperatures on Thursday will range from 14 to 19 degrees, with the midlands, east, and north likely to feel the warmest. Winds will be light to moderate southerly, picking up a bit to fresh at times near Atlantic coasts.

The National Outlook: Warming Up for the Weekend

Now, for the news we've all been waiting for. The national outlook suggests temperatures are on the rise for the rest of this week, with high pressure becoming more dominant as we head into the weekend. This is exactly what we want to hear as we approach the end of May!

Thursday Night: Cloudy conditions in the west and southwest, with patchy rain and drizzle spreading eastwards across the country. Mist, hill, and coastal fog are also expected. Another mild night, with lows of 11 to 13 degrees, and light to moderate southerly winds.

Friday: We'll start Friday mostly cloudy with patchy rain, drizzle, and mist. But, and this is the important bit, the cloud should break up through the afternoon, bringing sunny spells and a few scattered showers. Western and southern coasts might remain a bit cloudier. Highest temperatures will be between 14 and 20 degrees, warmest across the midlands, north, and east. Moderate southerly winds will ease later. Any showers should largely die out on Friday night, leaving variable cloud and clear breaks. Mist and fog patches are still a possibility. Lowest temperatures 9 to 12 degrees.

Saturday: This is where it starts to get good. Saturday looks set to be a mostly dry day with warm sunny spells for most of us. There's just a slight chance of an odd shower in Atlantic coastal parts, but nothing to write home about. Highest temperatures will be a lovely 17 to 21 degrees generally, maybe a touch cooler right on the coast. Light southerly or variable breezes will make it feel even better.

Sunday: Current indications are pointing towards a genuinely fantastic Sunday. It's expected to be a dry, warm, and sunny day for most. Of course, some mist and fog might linger in a few coastal areas, as is its nature. There's a small chance of thicker cloud and patchy rain or drizzle affecting the northwest, but for the majority, it's looking glorious. Highest temperatures could reach 18 to 22 degrees in light south-east or variable breezes.

Early Next Week: And the good news keeps coming! High pressure seems set to dominate into early next week, bringing generally dry and settled conditions. We could even see daytime highs potentially reaching the mid-twenties in places. Imagine that, summer arriving early!

So, while today and tomorrow might be a bit of a mixed bag, the trend is definitely towards warmer, drier, and sunnier weather as we head into the weekend and beyond. It's a welcome change, and hopefully, we can all make the most of it. For the most up-to-date information, it's always worth checking the official Met Éireann forecast. Enjoy the sunshine when it arrives!
