Ireland’s Women’s Rugby Revolution: From Underdogs to Champions
A Brief History: From Humble Beginnings to Historic Wins
Women’s rugby in Ireland has come a long way since its inception. The Irish Women’s Rugby Football Union was established in 1992, and the national team played its first international match against Scotland in 1993. Despite early challenges, the team achieved significant milestones, including winning the Women’s Six Nations Championships in 2013 and 2015, with a Grand Slam in 2013.

Grassroots Growth and Institutional Support
The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has made concerted efforts to promote women’s rugby at all levels. Initiatives like the Women in Rugby action plan aimed to increase participation, with targets such as 5,000 adult players and 6,500 youth players between 2018 and 2023. The establishment of the Women’s Rugby Network has also provided a platform for women to connect and share experiences.
Rising Stars and International Recognition
Ireland’s women’s rugby has seen the emergence of talented players who have gained international recognition. Erin King became the first Irish female player to win an individual accolade at the World Rugby Awards, being named Women’s Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2024. Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe made history by becoming the first Irish player, male or female, to score 200 tries in the SVNS Series.
Sevens Success and Olympic Dreams
The Ireland women’s national rugby sevens team has also made significant strides. They secured qualification for the 2024 Summer Olympics after a 10–5 win over Fiji. Players like Beibhinn Parsons have been instrumental in this success, balancing commitments between sevens and 15s rugby.
Future Prospects and Continued Growth
The IRFU’s 2024–2028 strategy aims to accelerate the growth of women’s rugby in Ireland. Plans include appointing a Women’s Strategy Implementation Lead to coordinate efforts both on and off the pitch. With continued support and investment, the future of women’s rugby in Ireland looks promising.
