Irish Government Under Fire Over Unfulfilled Disability Funding Promise
A major controversy has erupted in Irish politics following revelations that a promised €3.6 million grant intended to support children with disabilities was never distributed. The issue has ignited public outrage, particularly among affected families who feel betrayed by the government’s actions.

During a Dáil session, Sinn Féin Finance spokesman Pearse Doherty accused the government of using a child with cerebral palsy as a “prop” for a ministerial announcement just two days before the local and European elections in 2024. The promise, made by then Minister for Disability Anne Rabbitte, was expected to provide immediate relief to struggling families. However, nearly 17 months later, no funding has been received.
A Mother’s Betrayal from Irish Government
Among those affected is Denise McGahern, whose nine-year-old son, Jack Donaghy, has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair-bound. She was contacted to attend the announcement in Letterkenny, where she and her son appeared in media photos alongside Rabbitte and Minister Charlie McConalogue.
The grant was marketed as an “absolute game-changer for children in Donegal” and was meant to fund essential therapies through four organisations in the region. But despite the public declaration, not a single cent has been allocated to any of the 52 organisations across Ireland originally promised funding.
Denise, along with countless other parents, waited for months, only to be informed by government officials that the money never existed in the first place. She expressed her devastation upon learning the truth, saying she felt used for political gain and utterly let down.
Political Fallout and Public Reaction
Tánaiste Simon Harris did not attempt to defend the failure, calling it “extraordinarily disappointing” and vowing to rectify the situation. “I’m going to make sure it’s released,” he stated. “People, parents, their children, and organisations who applied in good faith need to receive this funding.”
Despite Harris’s commitment, many remain sceptical. The scandal comes amid accusations that the government misled the public during the General Election by falsely claiming that 40,000 homes would be built in 2024, a target that ultimately fell short by 25%.
Doherty strongly criticised the government, saying: “For years, parents have been forced to go it alone, crying out for help. Then in October 2023, they thought they were finally heard. But now they know this was just another empty promise.”
The Bigger Picture: Struggles of Disability Services in Ireland
This scandal highlights broader issues within Ireland’s disability services. Families across the country have long struggled with delays in therapy services, inadequate support systems, and the need to fundraise privately for essential medical care.
Disability services in Ireland have been underfunded for years, with significant backlogs in assessments and treatment plans. The now-exposed funding scandal has reinforced public distrust in government commitments to vulnerable communities.
What Happens Next?
While Harris has pledged to ensure that the funding will be made available, families are left questioning when and if this will actually happen. The political pressure is mounting, with opposition parties calling for immediate action and greater accountability from the government.
The scandal has also raised concerns about election-time announcements and the ethical implications of using vulnerable individuals in political campaigns. Calls for stronger regulations on political promises are gaining traction, as trust in government institutions continues to erode.
The revelation that a promised €3.6 million fund for children with disabilities never materialised has sent shockwaves across Ireland. Parents feel exploited, opposition parties are demanding accountability, and the government is scrambling to repair its damaged credibility.
As this controversy unfolds, the critical question remains: will the government follow through on its commitment, or will this be yet another broken promise to Ireland’s most vulnerable citizens?
