Irish Jockey Michael O’Sullivan Passes Away Following Thurles Race Fall
The horse racing world is mourning the tragic passing of Michael O’Sullivan, a rising star in Irish racing, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fall at Thurles Racecourse on 6 February 2025. During the two-mile Racing Again February 20th Handicap Chase, O’Sullivan was riding Wee Charlie for trainer Gerard O’Leary. The young jockey suffered a devastating fall at the final fence, triggering a five-horse pile-up that resulted in multiple injuries. O’Sullivan was immediately attended to on the track before being airlifted to Cork University Hospital, where he remained in intensive care for ten days before passing away on 16 February 2025.
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) expressed profound sadness over the loss, extending condolences to O’Sullivan’s family, friends, and colleagues. The IHRB’s chief medical officer, Dr. Jennifer Pugh, revealed that the jockey’s family had made the noble decision to donate his organs, ensuring his legacy lives on in helping others.

Michael O’Sullivan had established himself as one of the most promising jockeys in Ireland. He made a major breakthrough at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle aboard Marine Nationale and also guiding Jazzy Matty to victory in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle.
