Irish Pub Awards 2026: Celebrating Community & Excellence

We've all got our favourite local, haven't we? That spot where the craic is just right, the pint is perfect, and you feel instantly at home. It’s more than just a place to grab a drink; it's a cornerstone of the community, a place where stories are swapped, friendships are forged, and life unfolds. That's why the launch of the Irish Pub Awards 2026 is such good news. It is a vital moment to shine a light on the incredible work done by publicans across the country.

The Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) and the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) officially kicked off the Irish Pub Awards for 2026 yesterday, April 28th. The launch took place at The Laurels Bar & Restaurant in Clondalkin, Dublin 12, a fitting venue considering it was crowned the overall Irish Pub of the Year in 2025. It is a reminder of the standard of excellence these awards aim to recognise.

This year marks the eighth iteration of the Irish Pub Awards, and they continue to grow in importance. They are not simply about who pulls the best pint, though that's certainly a factor. Instead, the awards celebrate the entire spectrum of what makes an Irish pub special: innovation, outstanding service, community spirit, and the sheer effort publicans put into making their establishments welcoming and memorable.

What Makes a Pub Award-Worthy?

Publicans now have the opportunity to enter their establishments into up to ten distinct categories. This broad range ensures that different aspects of the pub experience are recognised, reflecting the diverse nature of Irish pubs today. From traditional local haunts to modern, innovative spaces, there's a category for every type of pub.

The categories for the Irish Pub Awards 2026 cover a wide array of strengths:

  • Best Food Pub: For those who excel in their culinary offerings.
  • Best Tourist Pub: Highlighting pubs that offer a quintessential Irish experience for visitors.
  • Innovative Pub of the Year: Recognising creativity and novel approaches in the pub sector.
  • Best Local Pub: The heart of the community, where regulars feel most at home.
  • Outstanding Customer Service: Celebrating staff who go above and beyond.
  • Best Music Pub: For venues that offer exceptional live music or a great atmosphere.
  • Best Cocktail Experience: A nod to the growing sophistication of drink offerings.
  • Best Outdoor Space: Essential for those sunny days or balmy evenings.
  • Best Digital Innovator: Embracing technology to connect with customers.
  • Best Match Day Pub: The ultimate spot for sports enthusiasts.

It is a comprehensive list, isn’t it? It shows that the industry understands the many hats a modern pub wears and the different ways they contribute to their local areas.

A Legacy of Excellence

Looking back at previous ‘Pub of the Year’ winners gives us a real sense of the quality these awards highlight. The Laurels in Clondalkin, of course, is the most recent. Before that, we saw Malzard’s Pub in Stoneyford, Co. Kilkenny, Aunty Lena’s in Adare, Co. Limerick, and Gleeson’s of Booterstown, Co. Dublin, all take the top prize. Kilkenny City’s Paris Texas, The Glyde Inn in Annagassan, Louth, and The Porter House in Castlebridge, Wexford, have also been celebrated. These names are dotted across the country, proving that excellence is not confined to any one region. Each of these pubs, in its own way, represents the best of Irish hospitality.

The individual category winners, year after year, further underscore the incredibly high standard of pubs in Ireland. It’s not just about the big overall title; it is about acknowledging the specific strengths that make each pub unique and beloved.

Why These Awards Matter

Michael O’Donovan, President of the VFI, put it very well at the launch. He said that the Irish Pub Awards are a "vital opportunity to recognise the exceptional standards that define our pub trade—from hospitality and service to creativity and community spirit." He acknowledged the challenges the sector faces but stressed that the awards serve as a powerful reminder of what makes the Irish pub world-renowned: its people. This sentiment resonates with anyone who has ever experienced the warmth and welcome of a good Irish pub.

Tom Cleary, Chair of the LVA, echoed this, highlighting the critical role Irish pubs play in Irish social culture. He called them "hubs that allow people to come together," a statement that rings true for countless communities across the island. In an increasingly challenging environment for hospitality, recognising the positive economic and social contributions of pubs is more important than ever.

Get Involved!

If you are a member of the VFI or LVA, entry to the Irish Pub Awards 2026 is free. This is a fantastic chance to showcase your hard work and dedication. The closing date for entries is Friday, May 29th, 2026, so there is still time to get your submission in via the official website: www.irishpubawards.ie.

The judging will take place over the summer, and the anticipation will build towards the grand finale. The Irish Pub Awards Gala night, where the overall National Pub of the Year and all category awards will be revealed, is set for Wednesday, November 18th, 2026, in Dublin.

Beyond the national recognition, the 70 regional winners will receive a prize package valued at €20,000. This includes management training and media coverage, such as a profile piece in an Irish Independent awards supplement. This kind of support can make a real difference to a pub’s development and continued success.

The Irish Pub Awards are more than just a competition; they are a celebration of a cornerstone of Irish life. They remind us that the pub is a place where community thrives, where traditions are upheld, and where innovation is embraced. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Irish hospitality, and we are certainly looking forward to seeing who takes home the honours this year.
