Lanzarote Sunbed Wars Erupt as Tourist Claims ‘Her Spot’

On April 1, 2025, at the Hyde Park Lane apartments in Lanzarote, a Scottish tourist ignited the annual “sunbed wars” by confronting fellow holidaymakers over a poolside lounger she claimed to have used all week. Despite a visible sign prohibiting the reservation of sunbeds, the woman accused a couple of occupying her regular spot. The altercation was captured on video by fellow guest Callum Lines, who noted that there were plenty of other available sunbeds with similar sun exposure.

A Heated Exchange Caught on Camera

In the footage, the woman, dressed in a pink cover-up, can be heard telling the couple, “You picked the wrong person!” When Lines attempted to intervene, she directed her anger towards him, saying, “Don’t be cheeky, don’t be smart-mouthed either. You don’t know who you’re talking to and you don’t know who we’re here with. So just keep your f**king mouth shut.” The woman then left to seek management assistance, but no staff appeared to resolve the dispute.

The Ongoing Battle for Poolside Loungers

This incident highlights the recurring issue of “sunbed wars” in popular holiday destinations, where tourists compete for prime poolside spots. Despite hotel policies against reserving loungers, guests often place towels or personal items to claim them, leading to conflicts and confrontations. Such behavior has prompted some hotels to implement stricter enforcement of sunbed reservation rules.

The Broader Implications

The “sunbed wars” phenomenon underscores the challenges of managing shared amenities in crowded tourist destinations. It raises questions about guest behavior, hotel policies, and the need for clear communication to ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. As the summer season approaches, hotels may need to reassess their strategies to prevent similar incidents and promote a more harmonious environment.
