Man Stabbed in Neck Over False Headphone Theft Accusation in Athlone
In a harrowing incident in Athlone, County Westmeath, a man in his 40s was brutally assaulted after being wrongly accused of stealing headphones. The assailant, 23-year-old Noel Rattigan, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and now awaits sentencing.

Incident Overview
On the night of July 1, 2023, both Rattigan and the victim were present at a local pub in Athlone, though they had no prior interactions. As the victim prepared to leave around 12:15 a.m., he retrieved his own headphones from the bar. Upon exiting, Rattigan confronted him, mistakenly claiming ownership of the headphones. Despite the victim’s attempts to clarify, Rattigan returned to the pub, procured a green bottle, and pursued the victim. He then smashed the bottle against a wall and used the broken end to stab the victim in the neck, resulting in severe injuries and significant blood loss. The victim also suffered additional blows and kicks during the assault. CCTV footage corroborated these events, leading to Rattigan’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
Legal Proceedings
During the hearing at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Keenan Johnson expressed grave concern over the unprovoked nature of the attack, emphasizing that it was “by the grace of God the victim was not killed.” He noted Rattigan’s history of alcohol and drug abuse, which began in his mid-teens, and his use of alcohol to gain confidence in social situations. The court also heard that Rattigan had consumed five or six pints on the night of the assault, in addition to medication for psychotic episodes. Given the severity of the offense and Rattigan’s background, Judge Johnson deemed him a “risk” to the public and remanded him in custody pending sentencing in July.
Community and Broader Implications
This violent episode has sent shockwaves through the Athlone community, highlighting concerns about alcohol-fueled aggression and its impact on public safety. It underscores the necessity for comprehensive strategies to address substance abuse and mental health issues, particularly among young adults. The incident also serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of impulsive actions and the importance of conflict resolution skills.
Prevention Implemented
As the community awaits the court’s sentencing decision, there is a collective hope that justice will be served, and measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. The case emphasizes the critical need for addressing underlying issues such as substance abuse and mental health to enhance public safety and well-being.
