Mayo Man Trevor Hyland Battles for Mullet Glory in Switzerland’s First-Ever Mullet Cup!

Ireland is cheering for its very own Trevor Hyland, who is representing the country in Switzerland’s inaugural Mullet Cup. The competition, which seeks to crown the world’s finest mullet, has catapulted Trevor, a native of Shrule, Mayo, into the spotlight as he takes on 70 other contestants from around the world. With his eye-catching ‘80s-inspired mullet, Trevor has quickly gained the moniker “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Mullet.”

As part of the competition, Hyland is vying for a chance to win prestigious prizes, including a year’s supply of Mullet Tea, a hard iced tea that sponsors the event, and a spot in the European Mullet Championship 2025 in France. The Mullet Cup is part of the larger “Festival de la Coupe Mulet” that celebrates the iconic hairstyle’s quirky resurgence.

How It All Started: From Marathon to Mullet Cup

Trevor Hyland had no plans to become a mullet champion until a chance encounter during a marathon in Switzerland changed everything. While running in a local town, a Frenchman noticed his mullet and burst into laughter, pointing at his hair. Initially confused, Trevor later learned that he was being encouraged to join Switzerland’s famous Mullet Cup, a competition he didn’t even know existed.

Trevor recalled the moment, saying, “I thought they were just taking the piss, but a few months later, it’s all real!” The Mullet Cup, a surprisingly competitive event, has brought together mullet enthusiasts from all over the world to showcase their haircuts in a parade set to take place in Martigny, Switzerland, this October.

Voting for Mullet Royalty

Public voting for the competition runs through September 26, and supporters can vote for Trevor Hyland by visiting the competition’s official website. However, there’s a twist: voters are required to choose five contestants in total to cast their ballot, making it a fair and fun process for all involved.

Trevor’s barber, Ciaran Collopy, is credited with perfecting his mullet, a process that took hours of trimming and styling. Trevor flew back to Ireland for his sister’s wedding, and it was during this trip that his radical new look garnered the most attention. “Everyone at the wedding was coming up to me, saying ‘We hear you’re doing a hair competition,’” he laughed.

The Ultimate Mullet Dream: Becoming the Face of Mullet Tea

Winning the Mullet Cup could not only earn Trevor the coveted trophy but also land him a lifetime supply of Mullet Tea and the chance to become the face of the brand as their official “Mullet Man”—a role likened to The Simpsons’ Duffman. The competition isn’t just about haircuts, but about embodying the carefree spirit and bold confidence that the mullet represents.

Reflecting on the experience, Trevor said, “It’s been a whirlwind. I’ve only been in Switzerland for a year, and now I’m representing Ireland in a hair competition!” Trevor, who works in pharmaceuticals in Visp, Switzerland, added that he has embraced the local culture and even joked about skiing every weekend during the winter.

Mullet Glory in Switzerland and Beyond

Should Trevor win the Swiss Mullet Cup, his mullet journey won’t end there. He would secure a spot in the European Mullet Championship in 2025, taking his hairstyle to the international stage in France. For now, however, Trevor is enjoying the unexpected attention and the thrill of representing Ireland in such a unique contest.

The Mullet Cup might seem quirky, but for fans of the hairstyle, it’s a celebration of retro fashion, nostalgia, and individuality. Whether Trevor takes home the title or not, his story has already captured the imagination of his supporters, making him a local hero.
