Netflix’s Top Show Based on a Heartbreaking True Story Leaves Viewers Emotional

A powerful British true-crime drama, now streaming on Netflix, has deeply moved its audience. Honour tells the harrowing true story of Banaz Mahmod, a 20-year-old Iraqi Kurdish woman from Mitcham, South London, who was brutally murdered in 2006. Banaz was killed on the orders of her own family after she left an abusive forced marriage to pursue a relationship of her own choice, an act that led to what is known as an ‘honour killing.’ Her father, uncle, and three cousins were later convicted of her murder.

Originally released by ITV in 2020, Honour has quickly climbed to the top of Netflix Ireland’s rankings. The series stars Keeley Hawes (known for Bodyguard) as Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode, who led the Metropolitan Police’s investigation into Banaz Mahmod’s tragic death.

The two-part series boasts a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has sparked a strong reaction from viewers. Many have taken to social media to express their grief and outrage over Banaz’s story.

One viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I cried… so so sad. So so evil.”

Another commented, “People should watch the Netflix series Honour. It’s an extraordinarily powerful account of the police investigation into the so-called ‘honour’ killing of Banaz Mahmod, a 20-year-old British Kurdish woman. It’s hard to watch, but important, from a social/policing perspective.”

Critics also highlighted the police’s failure to take Banaz’s repeated appeals for help seriously. One user noted, “Watching Honour on Netflix and she reported it to the police, even did a statement. Went to the police FOUR times. This was in 2006/2007, and nothing has changed to protect women, and they tried to arrest HER.”

Another viewer added, “Honour on Netflix is so sad. I have no words, it’s just sad. I would hope if this were to happen today their community would speak up, but I’m not sure that’s the case.”

Honour not only tells a tragic story but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing issues related to ‘honour’ violence and the need for societal and systemic change to protect vulnerable individuals.
