In a spectacular conclusion to the 2024 Rose of Tralee Festival, Keely O’Grady, representing New Zealand, was crowned as the 64th International Rose of Tralee. The 21-year-old Speech and Language Therapy student from Canterbury University was overcome with emotion as she accepted the prestigious title, making history as only the third New Zealand Rose to win the competition, with the last win dating back to 1988.

A Night of Celebration and Irish Heritage

The festival, hosted at the Kerry Sports Academy, showcased 32 Roses from around the world, each bringing their unique stories, talents, and connections to Irish heritage. Keely O’Grady expressed her deep pride in representing New Zealand on such a grand stage, noting the significance of her win for her country and the Irish community in New Zealand. She shared, “I’m shaking so much right now… What I’m most looking forward to is doing this for my country.”

The event was co-hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí Ó Sé, who brought their energy and charisma to the stage, introducing each Rose and guiding the audience through two nights of performances, interviews, and heartfelt moments.

The competition was fierce, with each Rose bringing their unique talents and stories to the stage. Notable moments included Donegal Rose Niamh Shevlin’s Irish dance performance, London Rose Glenna Mannion’s tea leaf reading, and Dublin Rose Casey Harris’s powerful representation of Finglas, highlighting the pride and challenges of her community.

New York Rose Billie Cooper also made a memorable appearance, discussing her globe-trotting childhood and teaching Dáithí a few lines of Mandarin. Westmeath Rose Grace O’Connor touched hearts with her shamanic practices and a poignant tribute to her late brother.
